Homes from 'Rocky' and legendary sports movies

By Erika Riggs, Zillow

?Many sports movie scenes take place on a field, in a dugout, post game in a locker room or coach's office. But in between great plays and dramatic scores, many of the films feature shots of houses as well.

From the gritty house featured in "The Fighter" to the classic 1950s rambler in "The Sandlot," here's a real estate tour through sports films.

"Rocky"

YouTube

Usually near the top of any list of greatest sports films, "Rocky" garnered a devoted following, three Oscars and five sequels. Rocky Balboa's apartment in an urban Philadelphia building was an iconic part of the first film.

Google

Rocky's apartment still stands in Philly.

Located at 1818 E Tusculum St., Philadelphia,?seen above, the brick building showcased iconic scenes between the boxer and his girlfriend, Adrian, as well as his manager, Mickey. Built in 1920, the residence today is listed as a three-bedroom, one-bath condo measuring 754 square feet.

"The Sandlot"

The classic children's film "The Sandlot" documents the summertime antics of a neighborhood's ragtag baseball team. Set in the 1960s, most of the 1993 film takes place in the empty lot where the boys play baseball, but one character's classic rambler home is briefly spotted.

Zillow

The home featured in "The Sandlot" looks much like it did in the '60s.

Built in 1956, the home at 1556 S 2000 E, Salt Lake City, pictured above, was last sold in 2009 in near original condition. Complete with green shag carpet, leaded-glass diamond-pane windows, beamed ceiling and brass light fixtures, the home looks just as it did 1960. The four-bedroom, three-bath Salt Lake City home sits on a quarter-acre lot and has 1,632 square feet of living space.

"A League of Their Own"

YouTube

Tom Hanks stands in front of the home in the movie "A League of Their Own."

Starring film heavyweights like Tom Hanks and Geena Davis, and featuring Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna, "A League of Their Own" showcased the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was established to keep baseball in the public's eye while men were overseas during World War II.

Zillow

The enormous Kentucky home served as a boarding house in the film "A League of Their Own."

Much of the film takes place on the field, but a large, Victorian-era home, above, gets its fair share of screen time toward the end of the movie as the setting for the boarding house. The Henderson, Ky., home was recently listed for sale in 2011 for $799,000. The listing was removed in May 2012. With nine fireplaces, three stories, full basement and five bedrooms, the house at 612 N Main St, Henderson?was more than roomy enough to host the movie's baseball team.

"The Fighter"

Zillow

Christian Bale, playing Dicky Eklund, walks toward the green home in the movie "The Fighter."

Like "Rocky," "The Fighter" was an Oscar-winning film that showcased an underdog boxer. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, the docudrama told the story of real-life boxer Micky Ward and his older half-brother Dicky Eklund.

Zillow

The home feature in "The Fighter" is still a bright shade of green.

Once a boxing contender himself, Eklund lives in the house shown above in Lowell, Mass. The home stands at 28 Smith St, Lowell?and is painted same green shade as it was in the film. The three-bedroom, one-bath home was built in 1900.

"Field of Dreams"

A scene from "Field of Dreams."

The white, clapboard farmhouse and baseball field used in the much-loved 1989 movie "Field of Dreams" continues to attract upward of 60,000 visitors each year. So it comes as no surprise that new buyers of the "Field of Dreams" site are reportedly going to develop a portion of the 193-acre farm into "All-Star Ballpark Heaven," a 24-field baseball and softball tournament facility.

Buffett, near 82, reflects on staying in Nebraska

(AP Photo/Nati Harnik, File)

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Omaha won't throw a bash for Warren Buffett's 82nd birthday on Thursday, and that's just fine with the billionaire investor.

The decidedly low-key lifestyle in Omaha, where Buffett was born and where he's lived continuously since 1956, is a key reason he chose to remain there rather than trade up to a city with a splashier skyline or new digs closer to Wall Street.

"If I had to live some other place I'd be fine doing it, but I can't think of a better place to live than Omaha," Buffett said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Buffett was born in Omaha in 1930 and spent the first 12 years of his life in Nebraska's largest city until his father was elected to Congress. After earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska, Buffett didn't return full-time to Omaha until he got his master's in economics at Columbia University and worked in New York for a few years.

He and his first wife, Susie, wanted their children to grow up in Omaha, so they returned to the Midwest city to plant roots.

Buffett didn't plan to start an investment partnership until a few family members and friends persuaded him to do so. But his success with the partnership before he liquidated it allowed Buffett to take control of Berkshire Hathaway in the 1960s and gradually transform the textile company into a conglomerate that today owns more than 80 businesses.

Buffett is known for investing in quality businesses that have fallen out of favor with the market, and he said being in Omaha helped him do that.

"In some places it's easy to lose perspective. But I think it's very easy to keep perspective in a place like Omaha," he said.

Buffett said being far from Wall Street actually helped him.

"It's very easy to think clearly here. You're undisturbed by irrelevant factors and the noise generally of business investments," Buffett said. "If you can't think clearly in Omaha, you're not going to think clearly anyplace."

In the city of 415,000, Buffett can drive the 20 blocks from his home to his office in about 5 minutes.

"I would find a long commute quite irritating even if I did it under favorable circumstances ? even if I had a driver," Buffett said. "I like being in the home and I like being in the office, and I'm not keen on in between."

Buffett said he's never been tempted to move, and that he doubts the company will ever move, either, because he said the two dozen people who work at Berkshire Hathaway's headquarters also like living in Omaha.

Previously, Buffett had said his successor should continue working wherever he or she thinks best, so it wasn't clear whether Berkshire's headquarters could move. Now, Buffett said he doesn't see any reason for his successor to move Berkshire.

"No, it won't be moved," Buffett said.

That's a relief to Omaha boosters who appreciate the people Buffett attracts to the city and the way he promotes the city outside of Nebraska.

The benefits to Omaha are most visible each spring when tens of thousands of Berkshire shareholders arrive for the company's annual meeting. No one knows exactly how much the company benefits Omaha's economy, but local business owners say it clearly does.

Diana Abbott, whose store sells books at Berkshire's annual meeting, said the event generates phenomenal sales, but the intangible ways Buffett helps Omaha may be even more important.

"You say Omaha, they think Warren Buffett," said Abbott, manager of the Bookworm. "It has really improved the reputation of Omaha, especially internationally," Abbott said.

Buffett readily lent his image to campaigns promoting Omaha, and he's featured prominently on the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce's website.

"He's kind of our iconic image for the community," said David Brown, the chamber's president and CEO. "This is a special place because he's here."

Berkshire Hathaway has made a number of people wealthy, and many of its early investors were from Omaha.

Dozens of those early Berkshire investors have become philanthropists who focused their donations on Omaha. Many of the city's biggest projects over the past decade bear the name of Berkshire shareholders.

"That's an important asset for this community," Brown said.

Former Omaha Mayor and Congressman Hal Daub agreed that generous shareholders have helped the city.

"Where would Omaha be without Berkshire Hathaway?" he said.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said the presence of Berkshire's headquarters is probably more important than the annual meeting because it helps improve the city's image nationally and boost philanthropy.

Of course, most large corporations, including Omaha-based Union Pacific and ConAgra Foods, employ hundreds or thousands of people at headquarters, not the 24 Berkshire employs. Berkshire makes up for its tiny headquarters with Buffett's visibility. When the so-called Oracle of Omaha speaks, investors listen, so financial news organizations readily travel to the city for Buffett interviews.

"It does bring greater visibility than other Fortune 500 companies," Goss said.

For Buffett, the decision to remain in Omaha seems primarily a matter of personal happiness.

"There's plenty of other places I like, but the one I love is Omaha," Buffett said. "The weather may be a little better some other place else, but that really doesn't make much difference to me in terms of how I feel about enjoying life."

Guinea troops fire on opposition leader's car

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) ? Security forces in Guinea opened fire on a car carrying three of the country's top opposition leaders Monday, leaving bullet holes in the sides of the vehicle and heightening tension between the country's opposition and the ruling party, according to witnesses. No casualties were reported.

Opponents of the ruling party had gathered early Monday at the home of opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo, who came in second during the 2010 election. Before the crowd could amass outside his villa, police began firing tear gas at the house, said Sidya Toure, an opposition leader who came in third in the first round of the 2010 vote. Alongside them was Lansana Kouyate, an opposition leader who came in fourth place in the poll.

To try to get away from the tear gas, Toure said the three of them jumped into Kouyate's bullet-proof car. The driver attempted to head to Kouyate's house in the Matoto neighborhood of Conakry, but on the way police began pounding the car with tear gas, said Toure as well as witnesses on the street.

"It's the first time that I have seen something like this happen in Guinea. They were throwing the cannisters, aiming for the car's reservoir. Then they started to shoot," Sidya said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from Kouyate's house, where the three had taken cover.

"They completely destroyed the cars that were in the convoy behind us. ... At first, when I heard the shooting, I thought they must be shooting more tear gas. It was when we got out that we saw the impact of the bullets. ... Thank God we were in a bullet-proof car," he said.

The opposition has been holding regular protests to stand up to what they say is President Alpha Conde's attempts to tinker with the electoral code. At issue is this the country's parliamentary race which has been delayed many times due to disputes between the ruling party and the opposition over the makeup of the electoral list, and of the commission that will referee the race.

Over the weekend, the governor of Conakry issued a decree, outlawing the protest planned for Monday. The opposition decided to go ahead, despite the ban.

"Live rounds were fired at our car. It's an inadmissible act," Kouyate told private radio station Planet FM, after reaching his home. "We are holed up in my residence where we will decide what measures to take."

The three leaders that were inside the car are some of the best-known politicians in Guinea. All three are former prime ministers, and all three ran in the 2010 presidential election, placing within the top four in the first round of the ballot.

In retaliation for the attack on the leaders, the opposition has decided to withdraw the members of their political parties currently serving in the institutions of the state, including its lawmakers in parliament, its Cabinet members and its appointees on the electoral commission.

In a statement read by Aboubacar Sylla, spokesman for a coalition of opposition parties, the leaders said: "We declare that we are suspending our participation in all the republican institutions."

Sylla added that they will press charges against Conde's government for "attempted assassination and brutality on a public right-of-way." The statement also said the opposition is urging its supporters to continue peaceful protests throughout the country, auguring more unrest.

The decision to remove their members from the government will rob Conde's administration of the image of inclusivity.

Guinea held its first democratic election in 2010, ending decades of dictatorship and strongman rule. However, the election was marred by ethnic violence. The majority of the protesters joining Monday's demonstration were from the Peul ethnic group, the ethnicity of Cellou Dalein Diallo, the defeated candidate. However, they were joined by members of the Soussou ethnic group, the ethnicity of Toure, as well as some Malinke, the ethnicity of Kouyate.

Non-Directional Fixed-Income Investing Strategies | Inside Investing

Despite historically low interest rates and the risk of future rate increases, there are ways to make money in the fixed-income market.

Many investors today wonder whether the ?ship has sailed? on investing in bonds. Apart from missing the rally, a number of prominent investors have been vocal about their decision to be short U.S. Treasuries over the last few years. These bond bears are quick to point out that the asset class is in a 30-year bull market and that absolute rate levels leave little room to fall.

Since the 10-year Treasury?s record low yield of 1.38% in late July, Treasury yields have spiked sharply. The 10-year Treasury yield rose almost 50bps (1/100 of a percentage point) in less than a month?s time before recovering back to the mid 1.60%?s as of Friday August 24th.

The objective here is not to point out short-term market fluctuations but, rather, to highlight the typical fears that reluctant bond investors face.? It is not practical to time or predict interest rate movements, but it?s helpful for investors to understand that the success of various fixed income strategies isn?t necessarily predicated on continued falling rates.

A handful of actively managed bond funds have shown significant relative outperformance in the face of a multitude of interest rate outcomes. Certain strategies and combinations of assets can perform well without needing rates to fall further.

PIMCO?s ?Best Ideas? Fund

PIMCO?s Dynamic Income Fund (NYSE: PDI) is a relatively new name (its IPO was in late May). It invests in a multitude of fixed-income asset classes. As of 24 August 2012,? the fund?s net asset value (NAV) had increased 11.08% since its inception (24 May 2012). The bulk of its outperformance appears to have come from the nonagency mortgage-backed security (MBS) portion of the portfolio, where prices have risen between 5% and 10% over the past few months.

PDI?s holdings in financial corporate debt (Cantor Fitzgerald, Morgan Stanley, Lazard, and Soci?t? G?n?rale, among others) have rallied strongly in lockstep with equities. Other exposure in the fund is to high-yield debt and levered loans of such companies as INEOS Finance PLC and First Data Corporation.

Because levered loans typically float to LIBOR, the securities have minimal interest rate risk?just spread and credit risk. PDI is also throwing off a lot of income with a 17.7 cent monthly dividend, which is about 0.65% a month. Remember, although this fund may be less sensitive to interest rates than? more plain-vanilla, U.S. Treasury?heavy bond funds, buyers should understand that is not the same thing as being ?risk free.? A substantial amount of credit and spread risk may exist.? Investors also need to understand that unlike an open ended mutual fund which trades at net asset value (NAV), closed end funds can trade at premium and discounts to NAV.

DoubleLine?s Approach

Jeffrey Gundlach?s DoubleLine Total Return Bond Fund (DBLTX) attracted the most money (about $11.5 billion) among mutual funds through June of this year, according to Morningstar. It?s no wonder it has been so popular; as of 15 August, the fund had a total return of 35.95% since its inception (April 2010). The fund has returned an annual equivalent of 13.89%, while its benchmark?the Barclays Capital Aggregate Bond Index?has returned 6.75% during the same period.

The fund has also performed well this year, with a total return of about 6.97% YTD. Since the 10-year Treasury?s record low yield of 1.38% on 24 July, $DBLTX has gone up in price. I would categorize Gundlach?s Total Return Fund as much less ?directional? than other funds. While other funds loaded up on longer pass-throughs (high LTV, low loan balance), which trade at premiums to normal MBS pools, Gundlach was busy buying out-of-favor pools backed by higher-balance loans, which trade at a discount.

Although this type of strategy may lag peers if interest rates stay low, I believe his portfolio is set up to make money across a wide range of interest rate scenarios. Nonagency MBS and cash holdings provide a buffer if rates move higher because they are considered ?negative duration.? Nonagency bonds are projected to increase in value as the economy improves and rates rise. In my view, the bottom line is that this portfolio is not betting on rates to move in one direction, and Gundlach has demonstrated great skill at combining various assets that outperform as a portfolio.

A New Entrant

A lesser-known fund is the Performance Trust Total Return Bond Fund (PTIAX). This fund has a total return of 10.08% YTD, which puts it in the 97th percentile in its asset class, according to Bloomberg. Since its inception (31 August 2010), PTIAX has returned an annual equivalent of 10.88% versus the 4.75% return of the Barclays Capital Aggregate Bond Index during the same period.

One of the fund?s major benefits is its overall nimbleness. With assets of only about $40 million, the fund can be a lot more selective in its choice of bonds than the DoubleLine or PIMCO funds, which are both substantially larger in asset size. Like PDI and DBLTX, PTIAX has substantial holdings in the nonagency MBS sector.

Because smaller allotments of bonds, or ?odd lots,? usually come with a price break, PTIAX is able, in a sense, to buy cheaper bonds than larger competitors can. In addition to nonagency MBS, the other portion of PTIAX?s ?barbell? is longer-duration, tax-exempt municipal bonds. In the event of a continued rise in interest rates, the municipal portion of PTIAX should provide a relative volatility ?buffer.?

Tax-exempt municipal bonds typically sell off to the tax-equivalent yield; thus, the bonds can be roughly categorized as having? only two-thirds the price volatility of taxable bonds. In plain English, this means that buyers purchase tax-exempt bonds on the basis of the tax-equivalent yield. Therefore, a 100 bp increase in the tax-equivalent yield would increase the tax-free yield by only about 66 bps owing to the tax benefit. Furthermore, municipal bonds still trade at historically wide spreads to U.S. Treasuries, which means that municipal bonds trade at higher yields. If U.S. Treasury yields do rise, spreads could revert to the historical average, which could further mitigate price depreciation. As previously stated, investors would be taking on credit and spread risk by purchasing a fund like PTIAX.

Don?t Write Off Bonds

It is certainly possible to own bond funds and enjoy positive returns without relying on Treasury yields? falling to new lows. As we have discussed, many of the funds that are most protected from a rise in Treasury yields require investors to take on credit and spread risk instead of interest rate risk alone. Actively managed bond funds, such as PDI, DBLTX, and PTIAX, have shown this to be the case, with outperformance in periods of both falling and rising rates. As with any investment, past performance is no indicator of future performance.

AnglerFish | Fun Animals Wiki, Videos, Pictures, Stories

The ocean is a giant body of water filled with mysteries still waiting to be discovered. There are millions of species of fish that look very scary to humans. In the movie Finding Nemo, Marlin and Dory end up swimming in the dark and encounter one of the strangest looking fish in the ocean, an anglerfish.?

Anglerfishes are part of the order Lophiiformes. These fishes are boney and are named after the way they catch their prey. They use a thin fleshy growth, found on their heads, as a lure, in a method that?s very similar to angling, or even fishing.?

Anglerfish subspecies have different habitats. Some are pelagic, or they dwell in open water, while some are benthic or bottom-dwelling. Others live in deep seas and trenches and some are found on continental reefs and shelves. They are found all over the world and are even considered as a delicacy in some areas.

Anglerfishes usually have one long thread-like growth on the middle of their heads. This is called the illicium and is actually the first three bones of their spines. The filament starts to grow above the eyes and can be moved in different directions. It contains an irregular flesh growth, called the esca, at the tip. The fish uses this by wiggling it around and catching the attention of its prey, as it resembles a worm that the smaller fishes try to catch. Once the smaller fish gets close enough, the angler then jumps up and eats its prey.

Many exotic pet owners have taken a liking to keeping angle fishes as pets. Since they are salt-water fishes, a special solution is needed to ensure the water stays at the right salt and PH levels.?

Offline Companies: A Potential Goldmine For Internet Consultants ...

If youre an online company who specializes in consulting, youd be wise to turn your eye to the thousands of businesses that have no sort of Internet footprint whatsoever. Your business may primarily deal with startups who come to you looking to better their Internet presence, but the fact of the matter is that there are potentially millions of dollars worth of customers who wont look your way at all. This is not because theyre inherently opposed to the Internet, just that many people are wary of the Internet and dont know how to approach it at all.

The people who arent on the Internet at all should be a prime concern if youve got an online consulting business that deals with helping companies improve their online images. Of course, most of the time youre used to having clients come to you to request your services, but being proactive on your part can reap great rewards. Not only is this a mostly untapped source of revenue, but also most businesses can benefit from any sort of online presence, even if its something as simple as a Twitter account. If you can introduce web-wary clients to these easy to navigate tools, youll be able to build a steady business relationship with them and help them take it to the next level when they feel comfortable.

Of course, the first question to ask is thus: how do you, an online consultant, get in touch with companies who arent online at all?

The simple answer? Go local.

You likely know of a few hole in the wall spots around town that arent likely to have a very strong Internet presence, if they have one at all. Consider actually physically going to these businesses yes! Get off the Internet for a moment and see if you can talk with the owners about their online marketing potential. Of course, acting like a door-to-door salesman might not be your style, but consider working through contacts to see if you can speak with the owner on a more friendly level, rather than walking straight up and offering your services. Not to say that the blunt approach wont work sometimes you might be surprised with how often it will but being able to work through connections will often make the process easier. And once you have one client under your wing, its amazing how fast word will spread.

The old adage think globally, act locally is so true in the case of online consulting companies working with offline customers. Youll need to think of terms of the Internet which is a worldwide endeavor but also bring your local knowledge and connections into play as well. When you combine these two initiatives, youll be surprised at how powerful they can be.

Your Health Journal - Len Saunders

From The Sydney Morning Herald?..

AUSTRALIAN children should be weighed and measured regularly at school to tackle childhood obesity, experts say.

Researchers from Deakin University?s World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention said efforts to address the public health epidemic in Australia were being hamstrung by inadequate and outdated data.

They said the federal government needed to introduce a population-wide program to monitor childhood obesity, which was ?a fundamental component of prevention?.

Writing in the journal Pediatric Obesity, the researchers said the absence of such a program meant Australia was falling behind other countries including Britain in measuring childhood obesity and evaluating strategies aiming at reducing it.

?Obesity is one of the major public health concerns facing Australia yet currently there are no routinely collected data to effectively track the problem,? they said.

?Monitoring obesity prevalence in children provides important population health data that can be used to track trends over time, identify areas at greatest risk, determine the effectiveness of interventions and policies, raise awareness and stimulate action.?

The researchers, led by Dr Katie Lacy, said opt-out consent ? where parents were informed of the program and consent assumed unless they sought to withdraw it ? was the best model to ensure high participation rates and obtain representative data. They said fears that taking height and weight measurements in schools could negatively affect children?s body image appeared to be unfounded, based on a statewide program in Arkansas in the US.

?In the Arkansas program, it has been shown that there were no significant increases in teasing, weight concerns, embarrassment or unhealthy dieting among adolescents after three years of measurements,? the researchers said. They said it appeared that problems could be avoided by taking measurements privately and confidential results.

Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills comes from behind to beat Traverse City West, 16-12, in week one football action on Thursday

?

, August 23, 2012 11:26 p.m.

After Grant Balino put Traverse City West up 12-9 late in the fourth quarter with a three-yard touchdown run, Kenowa Hills responded with a 25 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cody Ritsema to receiver Dylan Smith with under two minutes to play.

Then, with Traverse City West driving for the winning score, Kenowa Hills' Josh Fransted intercepted a pass to seal with win for the Knights.

"We got the ball with 1:30 to play, and our kids executed the two-minute offense well," Kenowa Hills coach Scott Van Essen said. "It wasn't easy, they had three linemen back and converted a lot of fourth downs on us.? We made a lot of mistakes, but we made the plays when we had to to pick up the win."

Casey Carruthers led Kenowa Hills in rushing with 80 yards on 14 carries, while Ritsema added 63 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

Chase Dunneback made 12 tackles to lead the Kenowa Hills defense, and Zach Evans added two sacks.

It turns out the Prime Minister rode that ATV?through an area that is the subject of a debate about ATV access.

?It?s hard to blame Mr. Harper,? said Ken Taylor, head of the lobby group Trails Only Yukon, a group including ATV riders that has pushed for ATV legislation for the past two years.??He comes up here and he doesn?t know Carcross from Carmacks,? said Taylor, referring to two Yukon towns.

But his handlers should have been aware of the territory?s prickly debate over ATVs ? especially in a place as unique as the Carcross Desert, he said.??His advisers should give him better advice than put him on an ATV in a place like that,? he said.?Before the last territorial election in October, Trails Only Yukon commissioned a poll that found 93 per cent of Yukoners wanted legislation to govern ATV use, said Taylor.

More from the National Post.

The Carcross Desert ? which Mr. Harper and his wife, Laureen, spent about 15 minutes exploring on rented ATVs ? is home to at least two species of at-risk plant and insect life, conservation officials said.?It?s a fragile environment that is ?being impacted by the high levels of ATV activity in the area,? said Christina Macdonald, a co-ordinator with the Yukon Conservation Society.

Ryan Leef, Conservative MP for the Yukon, pitched the photo-op idea ? which was squeezed between a community barbecue and a visit with puppies destined for the Iditarod sled dog race.??It shows that our prime minister is in touch with the average, common Canadian doing average, common things,? he said. ?For us as Yukoners, that location has been sort of a mainstay for dune buggies and ATVs and motor bikes for as long as I can ever remember.?

India faces Twitter backlash over Internet clampdown

4 hrs.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Indian government faced an angry backlash from Twitter users on Thursday after ordering Internet service providers to block about 20 accounts that officials said had spread scare-mongering material that threatened national security.?

The backlash came as New Delhi turned up the heat on Twitter, threatening "appropriate and suitable action" if it failed to remove the accounts as soon as possible. Several Indian newspapers said this could mean a total ban on access to Twitter in India but government officials would not confirm to Reuters that such a drastic step was being considered.?

There was no immediate response from Twitter, which does not have an office in India. There are about 16 million Twitter users in the South Asian country.?

The government has found itself on the defensive this week over what critics see as a clumsy clampdown on social media websites ? including Google, YouTube and Facebook ? that has raised questions about freedom of information in the world's largest democracy.

"Dear GOI (Government of India), Keep your Hands Off My Internet. Else face protest" tweeted one user, @Old_Monk60.

India blocked access to more than 300 Web pages after threatening mobile phone text messages and doctored website images fuelled rumors that Muslims, a large minority in the predominantly Hindu country, were planning revenge attacks for violence in the northeastern state of Assam, where 80 people have been killed and 300,000 have been displaced since July.?

Fearing for their lives, tens of thousands of migrants fled Mumbai, Bangalore and other cities last week. The exodus highlighted underlying tensions in a country with a history of ethnic and religious violence.

According to documents obtained by Reuters, the government has targeted Indian journalists, Britain's Daily Telegraph, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Al Jazeera television in its clampdown on Internet postings it says could inflame communal tensions.?

The directives to Internet service providers listed dozens of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter pages. A random sampling of the YouTube postings revealed genuine news footage spliced together with fear-mongering propaganda.?

Indian journalists targeted?
The government says Google and Facebook have largely cooperated while Twitter has been much slower to respond.?

"Every company, whether it's an entertainment company, or a construction company, or a social media company, has to operate within the laws of the given country," said Sachin Pilot, minister of state in the Ministry of Communications.?

Twitter has been instructed to remove 28 pages containing "objectionable content", an interior ministry official said.?

"If they do not remove the pages, the Indian government will take appropriate and suitable action," he added.?

The government has ordered Internet service providers to block the Twitter accounts of veteran journalist Kanchan Gupta and television anchor Shiv Aroor. Some appeared to have begun complying with the order on Thursday as Twitter users reported difficulties in accessing their pages.?

"It is a political decision, because of my criticism of the government," said Gupta, who was an official in the previous government led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.?

The government's actions triggered a storm of criticism from Twitter users, with the hashtags #Emergency2012 and #GOIBlocks among the top trending topics on Twitter in India on Thursday. Some compared the situation with the state of emergency imposed by the government in 1975, when some journalists were jailed.?

The Centre for Internet and Society, which analyzed the 300 banning orders, found that they contained "numerous mistakes and inconsistencies". Some of the banned websites belonged to people trying to debunk the rumors, for example, it said.?

"This isn't about political censorship. This is about the government not knowing how to do online regulation properly," said CIS program manager Pranesh Prakash.?

India's parliament last year passed a law that obliges Internet companies to remove a range of objectionable content when requested to do so, a move criticized at the time by rights groups and social media companies.?

Intentionally unvaccinated students putting other children at risk

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Parents nervous about the safety of vaccinations for their children may be causing a new problem: the comeback of their grandparents' childhood diseases, reports a new study from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

Despite the successes of childhood immunizations, wrote Penn Nursing researcher Alison M. Buttenheim, PhD, MBA, in the American Journal of Public Health, controversy over their safety has resulted in an increasing number of parents refusing to have their children vaccinated and obtaining legally binding personal belief exemptions against vaccinations for their children.

People who cannot get immunizations because of allergies or compromised immune systems rely on "herd immunity," the protection they get from a disease when the rest of the population is immunized or immune, explained Dr. Buttenheim. If a high number of children go intentionally unvaccinated because of personal belief exemptions, herd immunity is compromised, she said, giving a disease the chance to spread rapidly.

Dr. Buttenheim and colleagues studied data that more than 7,000 public and private schools report to the California Department of Public Health each year, for some 500,000 kindergarteners. They found that the number of children with one or more personal belief exemptions increased 25 percent in the state from 2008 to 2010. They also found that exempt children tended to aggregate within individual schools, and that a growing number of kindergarteners -- both vaccinated and exempt -- were attending schools with potentially risky personal belief exemption rates.

"Vaccines are one of the great public health achievements of the last couple of centuries," Dr. Buttenheim said. "They protect us from diseases that used to routinely kill hundreds of thousands of children in the United States and still kill hundreds of thousands globally. It's not just important for a child to be vaccinated, it's important at a population level to have high rates of coverage."

In 2008, a measles outbreak spread in California. It was traced to a child whose parents had decided not to vaccinate him. He brought the disease back from Europe, infecting other children at his doctor's office and his classmates. The boy's parents had signed a personal belief exemption affidavit stating that some or all of the immunizations were against their beliefs, thereby allowing their son to go unvaccinated before entering kindergarten. California is one of 20 states that allow such exemptions.

Nationally, because of generally widespread vaccination coverage among children, vaccine-preventable childhood diseases that once caused substantial disease burdens and death in the United States remain rare occurrences. Measles once infected four million people and killed 4,000 of them each year, mostly young children. With high measles vaccine coverage over several decades, endemic measles was eliminated in the United States as of 2000. The current routine childhood immunization schedule is estimated to prevent 42,000 deaths and 20 million cases of disease and to save $14 billion in direct medical costs per U.S. birth cohort.

Dr. Buttenheim plans to test several interventions at the school level, including new incentive structures for schools to increase adherence rates. She believes the school nurse can play a key role in encouraging parents to get children immunized. "We know everyone is heavily influenced by social norms and pressure," she explained, and school nurses can set the expectation that children get fully vaccinated. "I think the school nurse can really act as a gatekeeper here, and reset the norm in favor of immunization."

A mother just knows. Simple as that. | Wonderfully Wired

Personally, I?m tired of reading impersonal and statistical data regarding anything autismy. (See that ? I made up my own word!)

I?m far more interested in reading about real life stories told by real life families. I want to be able to read a story and relate and not just fill my head with facts that I?ll likely forget later on.?So that?s why I?m going to share Harley?s diagnosis story right here. I have touched on parts of it in some of my very early blog posts but for all those new readers: I want to share ?our? story and how I feel personally about early interventions services and how they have or have not affected our family as a whole.

There are a lot of reports around lately regarding early intervention (E.I.) and the validity of it. Which causes confused parents of newly diagnosed children to ask questions such as: Does early intervention really make that much of a difference? Will my child suffer if they don?t receive any? And is it true that those who do receive it have a much better chance at success in life? ?Well, my short answer is that there is no one treatment, therapy or intervention that is the best one for your child. Because different children need different things and we all know that what works for one child may not work for another.?But I will boldly say that from our experience: yes. Start some sort of intervention as early as you can and then add or subtract interventions as you see them become necessary or ineffectual. And?the key word here is to start early.?

I was reading this recently:

Is Early Intervention Really Effective?

After nearly 50 years of research, there is evidence-both data-based and reports from parents and teachers that early intervention increases the developmental and educational gains for the child, improves the functioning of the family, and reaps long-term benefits for society.

Early intervention has been shown to result in the child needing fewer special education and other services later in life and in some cases being indistinguishable from non-handicapped classmates years after intervention.

(You can read more from this site?> HERE <?).

And what really struck a chord with me was this line: ?improves the functioning of the family?. Because it wasn?t just Harley that was suffering. It was every last one of us who were at the brink of exhaustion each and every day. We all felt incredibly helpless, overwhelmed and alone.

We know first hand that E.I. works because the difference between our two boy?s diagnosis stories is as different as night is from day. Lucas has always had the upper hand being the younger and second diagnosed child. Because we already knew the telltale autism signs to watch out for, our house was already running in an ASD friendly way and there were visuals for everything from bathing and cleaning teeth through to step-by-step pictures of getting dressed in the morning stuck up all over the wall. And we had already learned through trial and error how to avoid a lot of possible meltdown triggers. So he wasn?t confronted with clueless and confused parents in the same way that Harley was.

But Harley, my poor sweet Harley hasn?t had it nearly as smoothly as that. I can remember diagnosis day really clearly like it was yesterday. It was a week before Christmas 2008 when we were first told that we were looking at autism. He was 4 and he was in his last year of pre-school. Already too old to access any early interventions at all. Not that we even knew what that was back then. And prior to staring pre-school he went to an in-home day care setting with 4 other children for 2 days per week. ?I would often talk to his carer and to his teachers in pre-school asking them if they thought there was anything that I should be concerned about and I was always told ? No, he?s fine. He?s just a typical rowdy boy.?

And all the while we were at home literally tearing our hair out in frustration because our child could barely talk, couldn?t focus on anything for more than a second or two and screamed and tantrummed for hours on end every.freaking.day. ?So naturally, it continued to bug me that none of the early childhood teachers had ever noticed anything ?different? about the way that he behaved or interacted. It also irritated me that friends would continue to down play any of my concerns. It felt like everyone had labelled me crazy and I began to seriously doubt myself and my parenting skills. But now I can see that none of them were trying to hurt me ? they either honestly didn?t see it or didn?t want to get involved so they said what they would want to hear themselves if they were in my shoes.

None of them noticed that he lined up toy cars in colour order. None of them could see the obsessions over routines and none of them seemed bothered by his lack of social skills. He was ?just a typical boy? I kept being told every time I voiced a concern.?In fact, I was made to feel like I was being incredibly neurotic. I was reassured time and time again that there was nothing to worry about and that if I chilled out a bit more that things would eventually calm down.?But I just couldn?t. Something didn?t sit right within me and I had begun to start my own research because I desperately wanted answers.?Then one day, I walked Harley up to the day-care lady?s door and he pitched a massive fit. He screamed, he kicked he flailed and he was off the scale.? The carer turned to me and said: ?What?s wrong with him? I?ve NEVER seen him like this?.

And I was floored. I?looked at her in utter disbelief and replied: ?You can?t be serious. What do you mean you?ve never seen this? This is all we EVER seem to see. This is the Harley that we live with, this is why YOU are looking after him at the moment and not me?. And I stormed off. I can?remember driving back home that morning, sitting in the car crying my eyes out and literally yelling at God demanding some sort of answers, and I got them. Oh crikey I got them!

Immediately, I was given perfect clarity and it all started to dawn on me:?THIS was high-functioning autism.(HFA). I?d read about this. My Mum had mentioned it to me in passing several times (and I was beginning to understand why she had). So I set about researching HF autism and Aspergers Syndrome. And one of the very few things that I?d remembered reading was that children who are high functioning usually keep it together in places that they don?t feel comfortable but the wheels fall off big time once they arrive home again.?And I KNEW that this was exactly what we were seeing with our Harley.

Over the following few weeks I rang many numbers from speech pathologists through to physiotherapists and was always told the exact same thing. ?Well?.he is too old for our early intervention program but if you think it would be of benefit, you might want to find your own speechie and OT?. And every time I would slam the phone down in disgust have a big old tantrum of my own. ?But conversely, Lucas was diagnosed at only 3 and spent 18 months in a wonderful E.I. program containing a speech pathologist, 2 early childhood teachers, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a psychologist.?And wow-oh-wow -?the difference in everything from social skills through to speech and impulse control is so bleeding obvious between the boys. I can?t help but be a little sad for Harley. ?And of course I have no concrete proof, but I can?t help but think that if I had have followed my mother?s instincts and demanded that Harley be seen earlier despite being told that I was paranoid over nothing, then maybe Harley wouldn?t have missed out on so many vital services.

But I?m not going to live in regret. I am thrilled with the progress that he has made over the last 5 years. I am happy that I understand my child more and more with every passing day and I know that he is an amazing kid with an amazing future. I figures out that there?s no point in torturing myself with woulda shoulda couldas.

But let me say this: If you have any concerns about your child?s development and maybe everyone around you is telling you what they think you want to hear but you still have doubts: Smile at them but follow your heart because a?mother is rarely wrong about her children. :)
