Eyeballs found in trash at Kansas City gas station

(AP) ? Police say they are trying to determine how a medical box containing a pair of eyeballs ended up in a trash bin at a gas station in Kansas City.

Police spokesman Steve Young says a worker at a Conoco station in the city's north called police after finding the cardboard box late Wednesday. The box was labeled, "Keep refrigerated."

Young says police aren't sure if the eyes are human, or whether any crime has been committed. Surveillance video shows two men in a blue Toyota leaving the package on the trash bin.

Police say no eye banks or hospitals in the area were awaiting delivery of any eyeballs.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner's office is holding the package while the investigation continues.

(AP) ? It would seem a lobbyist's dream: rounding up votes for a proposal backed by more than 8 in 10 people in polls. Yet, gun control supporters are struggling to win over moderate Democrats in their drive to push expanded background checks for firearms purchasers through the Senate next month.

Backed by a $12 million TV advertising campaign financed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, gun control groups scheduled rallies around the country Thursday aimed at pressuring senators to back the effort. President Barack Obama was meeting at the White House with gun violence victims.

Moderate Senate Democrats like Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota are shunning Bloomberg as a meddling outsider while stressing their allegiance to their own voters' views and to gun rights. While saying they're keeping an open mind and support keeping guns from criminals and people with mental disorders, many Democrats are avoiding specific commitments they might regret later.

"I do not need someone from New York City to tell me how to handle crime in our state. I know that we can go after and prosecute criminals without the need to infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding North Dakotans," Heitkamp said this week, citing the constitutional right to bear arms.

Heitkamp does not face re-election next year, but Pryor and five other Senate Democrats from Republican-leaning or closely divided states do. All six, from Southern and Western states, will face voters whose deep attachment to guns is unshakeable ? not to mention opposition from the still potent National Rifle Association should they vote for restrictions the NRA opposes.

"We have a politically savvy and a loyal voting bloc, and the politicians know that," said Andrew Arulanandam, spokesman for the NRA, which claims nearly 5 million paying members.

The heart of the Senate gun bill will be expanded requirements for federal background checks for gun buyers, the remaining primary proposal pushed by Obama and many Democrats since 20 first-graders and six women were shot to death in December at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada already has given up any hope of winning majority support for reimposing a ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines for ammunition.

Today, the background checks apply only to sales by the nation's roughly 55,000 federally licensed gun dealers. Not covered are private transactions like those at gun shows and online. The Senate measure is still evolving as Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., use Congress' two-week recess to negotiate for additional support in both parties.

Expanding background checks to include gun show sales got 84 percent support in an Associated Press-GfK poll earlier this year. Near universal background checks have received similar or stronger support in other national polls.

Polls in some Southern states have been comparable. March surveys by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute found more than 9 in 10 people in Florida and Virginia backing expanded background checks, the same margin found by an Elon University Poll in North Carolina in February.

Analysts say people support more background checks because they consider it an extension of the existing system. That doesn't translate to unvarnished support from lawmakers, in part because the small but vocal minorities who oppose broader background checks and other gun restrictions tend to be driven voters that politicians are reluctant to alienate.

"It's probably true that intense, single-issue gun voters have been more likely to turn out than folks who want common-sense gun laws," said Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the group that Bloomberg helps lead. Glaze, however, said he believes that has changed somewhat since Newtown and other recent mass shootings.

Several moderate Democrats are holding back as they assess the political landscape. They're also waiting to see exactly what the Senate will consider.

Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, said Wednesday his state's voters tell him, "Don't take away our rights, our individual rights, our guns." Begich said he opposes a strict proposal requiring background checks for nearly all gun sales but will wait to see whether there is a bipartisan compromise he can support.

The problems faced by gun control supporters go beyond the challenge of winning moderate Democrats. GOP opponents are sure to force Democrats to get 60 of the Senate's 100 votes to win, and there are only 53 Democrats plus two independents who generally support them.

Also targeted by Bloomberg's ads are 10 Republicans, including Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, home of ex-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was severely wounded in a mass shooting; the retiring Saxby Chambliss of Georgia; and moderate Susan Collins of Maine.

In another indicator of hurdles facing gun control forces, the Senate voted 50-49 last week to require 60 votes for any legislation narrowing gun rights. The proposal lost because 60 votes in favor were required, but six Democrats voted for the proposal, offered by conservative Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah.

"It confirms there's no such thing as an easy gun vote," said Jim Kessler, a senior vice president of the centrist Democratic group Third Way.

Underscoring the uncertainty about moderate Democrats:

?Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., is "still holding conversations with Virginia stakeholders and sorting through issues on background checks" and proposals to ban assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines, spokesman Kevin Hal said.

?Pryor said of Bloomberg's ads: "I don't take gun advice from the mayor of New York City. I listen to Arkansans." Spokesman Michael Teague said Pryor opposes universal background checks but could favor expanding the requirement to gun show sales.

?Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., told the Greensboro News & Record she favors expanded background checks, but said her vote would depend on the measure's details. Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., answered, "Yes," when the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette asked whether he supports gun show background checks.

The gun bill also increases penalties for illegal gun sales and slightly boosts aid for school safety.

More abrupt changes like an assault weapons ban generally get slight majorities in polls. Democratic leaders decided to omit it from the Senate bill because such a provision lacks enough votes.

What attracts people to violent movies?

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Why are audiences attracted to bloodshed, gore and violence? A recent study from researchers at the University of Augsburg, Germany and the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that people are more likely to watch movies with gory scenes of violence if they felt there was meaning in confronting violent aspects of real life.

Anne Bartsch, University of Augsburg, Germany and Louise Mares, University of Wisconsin-Madison, will present their findings at the 63rd Annual Conference of the International Communication Association. Their study examined whether these serious, contemplative, and truth-seeking motivations for exposure to violent portrayals are more than just an intellectual pleasure. They invited a large binational sample from Germany and the US (total of 482 participants), ranging in age from 18-82, and with varying levels of education. Participants viewed film trailers featuring different levels of gore and meaningfulness, and rated their likelihood of watching the full movie. They also indicated their perceptions of the film (how gory, meaningful, thought-provoking, suspenseful, etc.).

Earlier studies have suggested that audiences are not necessarily attracted to violence per se, but seem to be drawn to violent content because they anticipate other benefits, such as thrill and suspense.

These findings suggest that such hedonistic pleasures are only part of the story about why we willingly expose ourselves to scenes of bloodshed and aggression. Some types of violent portrayals seem to attract audiences because they promise to satisfy truth-seeking motivations by offering meaningful insights into some aspect of the human condition.

"Perhaps depictions of violence that are perceived as meaningful, moving and thought-provoking can foster empathy with victims, admiration for acts of courage and moral beauty in the face of violence, or self-reflection with regard to violent impulses," said Bartsch. "Examining the prevalence of such prosocial responses and the conditions under which they occur offers a theoretically intriguing and socially valuable direction for further work."

How To Market Your Business For Free Using Twitter | Content for ...

Author: Dave M Williams | Total views: 101 Comments: 0
Word Count: 711 Date:

Today we're going to discuss how you can build your business for free using Twitter. Twitter has grown to be one of the largest social media networks on the internet, and is actively visited by celebrities and high-profile people.

If you want to put Twitter to work for your business, you first need to create an account on Twitter. Register for free and upload a picture and a short description of yourself or your business. Make sure you include your main website in your bio.

Next thing you want to do is to write and post around 20 tweets. This is so your account doesn't look empty when people visit it to check if you are "follow-worthy".

All right, now that you got an account you need to get yourself a good Twitter client so that you don't have to use the normal Twitter interface (which kinda sucks.)

I strongly recommend that you Google "HootSuite", which is a free website that manages your Twitter account.

Spend some time getting yourself familiar with HootSuits interface, and then setup your "columns" over there like this:

Column #1: Sent tweets

This is your tweet stream. Keep this one handy to know what you just said.

Column #2: Mentions

It will track who is mentioning you and replying to your tweets. It's important to respond to these occasionally and to respond to them quickly. This will ensure that the people you interact with visit your profile and start following you.

Column #3: Influencers list

It's important to know who your influencers are and what they are tweeting, so you can get on their radar. You could follow your influencers, but I don't like to until there's been some interaction.

Instead, I use private lists, the Twitter-feature to keep tabs.

Here's how to set them up in HootSuite:

Step 1: Click on "Add Stream."
Step 2: From the pop-up menu, select "Lists."
Step 3: Select your profile from the drop-down menu.
Step 4: Select the "Create a New List" radio button.
Step 5: Name the list "Influencers."
Step 6: Add a description (optional).
Step 7: Click the "Add Stream" button.
Step 8: Once the stream is added, click the triangle on the top of the column.
Step 9: From the drop-down, select "Preferences."
Step 10: Add users to your list by typing in their usernames and clicking "Add."

Make sure to set this list as "private", otherwise everyone can see it, and it will notify who ever's on the list.

Column #4: Scheduled tweets

I use this column to keep tabs on what I've scheduled ahead of time to know what's coming and if I need to add more tweets or perhaps adjust my Tweet Schedule.

Column #5: My tweets, retweeted

The My Tweets, ReTweeted column shows you who is retweeting your tweets.

Column #6: Search filters

The best thing about HootSuite is that you can monitor search results in real-time. We're going to save those in the next set of columns.

My next step, while interacting with Twitter influencers is courting potential followers. It's also stupid simple. All I did was monitor the real-time keyword and hashtag searches I setup earlier, and reply to people's tweets. Most of the time it was answering questions, but I found an insightful comment or even an encouraging message beneficial.

As soon as you see something interesting in the real-time search column, be sure to answer it. Do this every day for 30-60 minutes and you will gather a large following of twitter fans in no time.

After that you can just post links to your website in between all the cool "normal" things that you tweet to your followers. Also, make sure that you track the traffic coming to your site from Twitter, so that you know how many visitors you are getting from your efforts. Try this and you will start to see visitors coming to your website from Twitter every time you post a tweet that includes a link back to your website.

Fed's Bernanke sees mixed picture in euro zone

LONDON (Reuters) - The situation in the euro zone has shown the difficulties of operating a single currency across several countries, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Monday.

"There is a basic question - what is the right size for a single monetary policy?" Bernanke said in response to a question at a panel discussion in London.

While some aspects of the euro zone were optimal, including the credibility of its central bank to deliver low inflation, there were also differences across countries in terms of competitiveness and their different stages in the economic cycle, he said.

"So I think it is a mixed picture," Bernanke said.

High court weighs drug companies' generics policy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court is struggling with whether it should stop pharmaceutical corporations from paying generic drug competitors to delay releasing their cheaper versions of brand-name drugs.

Justices heard arguments from federal officials Monday that these deals can be anticompetitive and keeps lower-cost generic drugs out of American hands. But pharmaceutical companies say these deals save litigation costs and often bring generics to market faster.

A government lawyer argued the companies should be forced to prove that their deals serve a purpose beyond simply paying a generic drug's maker not to challenge a brand-name drug's patent.

But a pharmaceutical company lawyer says they shouldn't be forced to litigate each generic vs. brand-name drug patent lawsuit to conclusion when a settlement can be reached.

Justices will make a decision later this year.

Successful Parenting : Steps To Adopt A Child

Adoption is a wonderful alternative for many children. An adoption is the legal process by which a child's biological parents are relieved of their rights and often duties to the child and new parents are appointed to be the child's parents from that point forward. Adopting a child has the same legal consequence as actually giving birth to the child. The adopted child is legally the same as a child of your flesh.

Advertising Space - After your Hub is published advertisements may be placed in this space. Please note, it can take some time after you publish for the ads to match the content of your Hub.

There are too many possible scenarios in which someone might want to adopt a child to list here but some common circumstances include: Grandparents adopt when the parents are unable or unwilling to care for the child

Foster parents adopt children that they have cared for in the foster system. Often these children are placed with the foster parent by child protective services. Agency sponsored adoptions. These are adoptions in which the biological parents of the child use an agency to place the child with new parents. International adoptions and Adoption of a step-child by a step-parent.

The adoption process requires that you first meet a list of requirements before you can be considered for adoption. If you meet these requirements you can move forward. If you do not there is no point in filing the paperwork because the judge cannot or will not grant the adoption.

Some of these requirements are easy to see, such as age. Others require more investigation. As explained below the court will do the investigation necessary to determine if you qualify. You must be at least 21 years old and a mature adult. You must be financially stable. This does not mean rich, but does mean that you must have the ability to provide the basic necessities for the child. Must also pass an adoption home study. These will be discussed in more detail below.

If you feel that you meet the requirements listed above you can move forward with the adoption.

You should not attempt to represent yourself in an adoption. There are some legal matters where it is fine and appropriate to represent yourself. This is not one of them. You need a qualified lawyer representing you. The only exception to this is if you are working with CPS. In that case the State has a team of lawyers working on the case and they will handle everything.

Your lawyer will file a petition seeking adoption of the child. This is a fairly straightforward document that asks the court to enter an order naming you as the parents of the child. Depending on your circumstances your lawyer may also file a motion seeking the termination of the biological parent's rights. This must happen as legally the child can only have one set of parents.

An order terminating a person's parental rights is often referred to as the death penalty of family law. Once the order terminating has been entered and the time for appeal expires it will legally be as if the parent of the child is a stranger to the child. They will have absolutely no rights and if they approach the child the new, adoptive parents can call the police just as if a stranger were stalking their child.

Orders terminating parental rights often terminate the biological parents obligations to provide support for the child but do not have to. They can also include an order that the biological parent provide a medical history for the child's benefit.

Judges don't just allow anyone to adopt. They want to make sure they are placing the child in the best possible place. To accomplish this the state legislature has passed laws requiring certain things be accomplished before an adoption is granted. These include: background checks for both potential adoptive parents (or just the step-parent in the case of a step-parent adoption), home study, interviews with an attorney ad litem for the child.

The criminal background check is performed by the FBI. It requires that you fill out a form giving them all types of identifying information and have yourself finger printed by someone from your local law enforcement.

The law doesn't require that you have an absolutely clean record but if you have any charges or convictions for crimes involving children you will not be approved. Anything else will be handled on a case by case basis.

The home study is performed by CPS and is used to determine whether or not the potential adoptive family has the financial resources, space for the child and that the home is appropriate and safe. The focus is less on the physical inspection of the home, although that is important, but more about how the family relates to one another and their background, relationships and feelings on certain issues such as discipline and similar issues. The home study takes into account: Marital stability, Family and friends as a resource network, Reason for the adoption

Basic parenting skills with a focus on discipline and building sibling relationships, Physical and mental health of the potential adoptive parent or parents, Ability to handle sensitive issues faced by adopted children such as: abuse, the birth parents, growing up in a different ethnic or cultural environment and dealing with different Simply put the Attorney Ad Litem is an attorney appointed by the court to represent the child. Their job is to determine and express the child's interests while at the same time making sure that the child is not being taken advantage of or disadvantaged in any way by the adoption. The court will ask them to report on their findings and if they are against the adoption the chances that the court will disagree are slim.

Eventually you will appear before the judge and ask that he or she order the termination and grant the adoption. Some judges require that these two events happen at different hearings. The reason being that the terminated parent could technically appeal and have the termination overturned which would then overturn the adoption. To avoid this the judge terminates the biological parent and then makes you wait until their appeal date has passed before granting the adoption.

Generally the judges want the children to be there for the adoption portion and like to take pictures with the new family. Adoptions are one of the few good things that family law judges get to participate in so they enjoy them as much as possible.

In generally adoptive parents are married. Statistics regarding divorce may be undependable but the simple fact of the matter is that any marriage could end in divorce. Adopted children are treated in exactly the same manner as biological children by the divorce courts. That means that whether it is a step parent adoption or a foster adoption if the parents divorce the final decree of divorce will set out custody and visitation for the child and child support payments for one or both spouses to pay.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology says that nearly 90 percent of commercially available green pointers and about half of red pointers they tested are too strong and violate federal safety regulations.

Green lasers use a shorter wavelength of light than red ones, making them brighter and more dangerous. The darker part of the retina heats up from the green laser?s intense, yet invisible, infrared light, which can cause retinal scarring and even blind spots. Because the damaging wavelengths are invisible, the eye?s natural defense mechanism?its eyelid?doesn?t close to provide protection.

Airline pilots are well aware of these dangers: in 2011 alone there were more than 3,500 cases of lasers being pointed at aircraft. In July 2012 one unfortunate JetBlue pilot suffered an eye injury when someone on the ground shined a green laser through his cockpit window. Luckily, the flight landed safely. Unluckily, it didn?t land on the person pointing the laser.

How An Unlikely Drug Helps Some Children Consumed By Fear

George McCann has been diagnosed with a subtype of bipolar disorder called the "fear of harm" profile, and finds that a prescribed dose of ketamine every few days alleviates his symptoms.

George McCann has been diagnosed with a subtype of bipolar disorder called the "fear of harm" profile, and finds that a prescribed dose of ketamine every few days alleviates his symptoms.

Michael Rubenstein for NPR

As far back as he can remember, George McCann lived in fear. When he was asleep he would have horrific nightmares filled with violent images. When he was awake, he often felt threatened by people, including members of his own family. And when he felt threatened, he would become aggressive, even violent.

George spent his childhood certain that something very bad was going to happen. And when he was 12, it did. His unrelenting fears led to a violent outburst at school. And George landed in a psychiatric hospital.

It was a frightening place for a fearful kid. When staff members tried to restrain him during a confrontation, he fought as if his life were at stake. George was big and strong for his age. But it was no contest.

"I was strapped down at the ankles, across the chest, and at my wrists," he says. "And they put me into the room with padded walls, you know. I remember screaming and screaming and screaming."

Today, George is 22 and back at home with his parents, two younger siblings and a dog named Tressel. They live in a small, single story house within commuting distance of Manhattan.

When George answers the door, it's clear he's grown into a big, sturdy guy. He wears rimless glasses and slightly rumpled clothes. His handshake is surprisingly gentle.

George's passion is movies, which he reviews on his blog. He's even written a couple of scripts. One is a western. "It's about redemption and whether people can find it or not," he says.

Sitting on the living room couch with his mother, Cydney McCann, George explains how his own redemption came in the form of an inquisitive psychiatrist and the experimental use of a drug called ketamine.

George McCann's struggles with fear and rage started before he could talk. His mother realized early on that her son was nothing like his cousin the same age.

"I remember when they turned three my sister-in-law saying to me, 'Oh, isn't three great? They're so cooperative,' she says. "And I remember saying, 'No, not here.' "

George's tantrums were extreme. A simple "no" could touch off hours of screaming and biting, and kicking, Cydney says. And her son's anxieties were also extreme.

"By the time he went into kindergarten, he was so nervous about everything," she says. "He would be afraid to get on the bus. He was afraid of the bus driver. He was afraid of the school. He couldn't go to people's houses. He couldn't have a play date."

At home, his tantrums grew into rages, Cydney says. Then, once the episode was over, her son would apologize and feel intense shame and guilt. She realized just how desperate he had become one day when he was five.

"I found him in his room and he had tried to hang himself by the curtain rod," she says. "He took a scarf and tied it on the curtain rod and had tied it around his neck and tried to hang himself."

Cydney began taking her son to psychologists and psychiatrists. They told her he had obsessive compulsive disorder and ADHD. Eventually, during his stay in the psychiatric hospital at age 12, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

All the diagnoses came with drugs: Zoloft, Paxil, Ritalin. "I remember a lot of pills with different colors," George says. But they didn't make him much better. And some made him worse.

Cydney McCann remembers trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy by having the whole family, including George, sit down together for dinner. But something always happened, she says. "Either he would fly off in a rage and leave the table, or one of the other kids would get upset and get scared and leave the table, or get mad and leave the table. We literally never completed a meal."

By the time George was a teenager, he'd become the patient of a psychiatrist named Demitri Papolos who was studying kids with similar problems. Papolos is director of research at the Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation and a researcher at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He's also the author of a book called The Bipolar Child.

Papolos believes children like George have a subtype of bipolar disorder he calls the "fear of harm" profile.

That's a controversial idea. The mental health world is debating which children should even be called bipolar. And there's no consensus on what to call kids like George McCann. But Papolos says studies suggest there are hundreds of thousands of them ? though many have milder symptoms than George.

McCann is passionate about movies, and is working on a script about redemption. He lives in Hawthorne, N.Y. with his parents, two younger siblings and a dog named Tressel.

Michael Rubenstein for NPR

There are several core characteristics of these children, Papolos says. One is a variety of sleep disturbances including frequent and terrifying nightmares. "They're all about pursuit or abandonment," he says. "Some animal chasing them. A shark biting into their leg, and they feel the blood and the pain."

George McCann had a lot of dreams like that, including one in which his father survived a terrible car accident only to be shot dead.

Another characteristic of kids like George, Papolos says, is an extreme reaction when anyone tries to control their behavior. "They may very well be very aggressive, particularly at home and particularly where there's any limit-setting because limit-setting is experienced as a threat to them," he says. "They're functioning on a very primitive fight-or-flight level."

When these kids do become violent, it's not premeditated, Papolos says. They're not potential mass killers. They're responding the way an animal might, defending its territory.

That certainly described George as a child, says Cydney McCann. "The reaction would be like an instantaneous thing," she says. George describes his response as "Zero to 100 in a millisecond."

But after such an episode is over, these children can be sweet and loving, Papolos says.

There's one more characteristic of the "fear of harm" profile that's not about behavior at all. These children overheat easily, Papolos says, especially at night.

Once again, George McCann fits the profile. He says he often put an ice pack on his head to help him get to sleep.

After studies showed that these children seemed to be a distinct group, Papolos began wondering whether there might be a better way to treat them. He knew the usual drugs for depression and anxiety and mania weren't enough. So he began looking for a medicine that could reduce fear and simultaneously lower body temperature.

"And lo and behold there were animal studies showing that ketamine did just that," he says.

Ketamine is approved as an anesthetic. It's also a club drug that can cause out-of-body experiences. And research in the past few years shows that ketamine can lift severe depression, often in a matter of minutes.

Papolos thought it just might help the fearful children he was studying. He had a particular child in mind: a seven-year-old girl who had severe nightmares, night terrors, separation anxiety and psychotic symptoms. And, by chance, this little girl was scheduled for a dental procedure that can be done using an inhaled form of ketamine as the anesthetic.

"She got ketamine and for two weeks she was completely asymptomatic," Papolos says. "We had never seen anything like it before." That was five years ago. Today, the girl is still taking ketamine and is still free of symptoms, Papolos says.

After a number of successes with ketamine, Papolos discussed the drug with George and Cydney McCann. By this time, George was in high school and his moods were less extreme. But fear still dominated his life. He was terrified by subway rides. He was too frightened to drive a car.

So when Papolos offered the drug, Cydney McCann wanted George to try it. She didn't want the disorder that had shaped her son's childhood to hold him back as an adult. But George, who still lived in fear of so many things, was afraid to try the new drug.

"I'm going to become some kind of addict," he remembers thinking. "I'm going to die the first time I take this. It's going to change who I am."

But in 2010, George did try Papolos' ketamine treatment. He says he'll remember the day for the rest of his life. "I think we did two puffs and I remember I sat up and I just started laughing," he says. Then his mother picks up the story: "You said you had an internal feeling of calm that you had never had before in your life. And when we came home that night, that was the first night that we ever all had dinner at the table without somebody leaving."

Papolos has treated about 60 young people with ketamine so far and says all but two have had dramatic responses. Interestingly, he says, the two whose behavior did not change were also the only patients whose overheating problems weren't helped by the drug.

It's a surprising and provocative result. But the research is still in its very early stages. The number of patients treated so far is small, and the approach is so new it hasn't been tested by other researchers yet. Papolos says he's hoping a study he published late last year will help persuade other researchers to try the drug on other children.

In the meantime, George McCann continues to inhale a prescribed dose of ketamine every third day. The fear and anger that once dominated his life are gone, he says, adding that his mind is free now to work on that movie script about redemption.

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar to Clean Your Carpet

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar to Clean Your Carpet We already know that vinegar is a great weapon for fighting carpet stains, but adding a little baking soda can take it to another level.

Household blog One Good Thing by Jillee suggests soaking the stain with vinegar, then sprinkling in a little bit of baking soda. The order is important here; pour vinegar on a pile of baking soda, and you have the makings of a carpet volcano. Once you have a bubbling mound of baking soda on the floor, just wait a few moments for it to absorb the stain, then wipe and vacuum it up. Jillee used this mixture to clean up pet urine, but it should work on a variety of stains, so hit up the source link for some more photos of this hack in action.

Immigration Talks Hit Snag Over Business and Labor Concerns ...

9:01 p.m. | Updated On Friday evening, the group of eight senators who are working to produce bipartisan immigration legislation and racing to work out a final dispute between the business and labor communities before Congress left for a two-week recess hit yet another obstacle, when the four Republican senators in the group spurned what a major union described as a another attempt at compromise.

On Thursday, the talks had broken down over the question of how to handle the future flow of legal immigrants into a low-skilled, year-round, temporary worker visa program. The United States Chamber of Commerce wants a visa program to help meet the business community?s demand for labor, while the A.F.L.-C.I.O., the nation?s largest federation of unions, is concerned with ensuring that American workers are protected and still receive fair wages.

According to the A.F.L.-C.I.O., the organization offered what it felt was a fair concession: Use the existing language already in laws that govern visas for high-tech, high-skilled worker and low-skilled, nonagricultural worker programs ? known as H-1B and H-2B visas ? as the language for ensuring worker protections in the new low-skilled visa program that the business and labor groups are trying to create. The current language states that ?visas will be issued only when the employment of foreign workers will not adversely affect the wages and working conditions of similarly situated workers in the United States.?

The Republicans in the group rejected the proposal, sending the entire effort back to the negotiating table, just hours before Congress is set to recess for two weeks.

Senate and House Republicans, meanwhile, have begun both publicly and privately criticizing labor, accusing the unions of trying to kill any hope at a comprehensive immigration bill.

Though the chamber and the A.F.L.C.I.O., which have been in almost parallel talks to the official negotiations for several months, had tentatively reached an agreement in recent weeks, the chamber recently pushed Republican members of the Senate group to reopen the sensitive topic of a low-skilled worker program. However, others close to the negotiation say that no agreement ? even tentative ? was ever reached among the eight senators, especially concerning the controversial guest-worker program.

At issue is the median hourly wage for low-skilled workers who could be brought in during labor shortages. The business community wants to pay the workers one step below the median hourly wage, while the unions want to pay them one step above.

The labor community, which was already frustrated by what it viewed as the chamber?s tendency to litigate issues in the press, viewed that twist as akin to an episode of ?Peanuts,? with Lucy once again moving the football as Charlie Brown tries to kick it.

?Working people don?t believe it meets the laugh test for corporate interests to attempt to hijack the moral and political urgency of citizenship for more than 11 million people in order to lower wages for local immigrant and nonimmigrant workers,? said Jeff Hauser, a spokesman for the A.F.L.-C.I.O. ?This immigration reform effort is about preventing deportations from ripping apart families, not lowering the median wages of low-wage workers struggling to get above the poverty level.?

The chamber rejected the characterization.

?It is simply untrue that the business community is seeking to pay foreign workers anything other than what American workers receive,? said Randel K. Johnson, the senior vice president of labor, immigration and employee benefits at the chamber. ?First, any immigrant worker who would come in under this program has the same protections as American workers and therefore it would violate the Fair Labor Standards Act to pay less than the minimum wage. Second, any temporary worker program would require that an immigrant worker be paid the greater of actual wages being paid to comparable American workers or the prevailing wages.?

Last month, the chamber and the A.F.L.-C. I. O reached an agreement, at least in principle, recognizing the need for a visa program that would allow businesses to meet their demand for low-skilled labor, while also protecting American workers.

But the groups remained divided over the maximum number of visas the low-skilled worker program should offer, with the chamber asking for 400,000 visas, and labor preferring a much lower number. Now, the two groups seem have reached a tentative agreement on the size and scope of the program ? up to 200,000 new visas annually for the low-skilled temporary worker program.

The chamber blamed the unions for the stalled negotiations.

?The chamber continues to believe that comprehensive immigration reform needs to be achieved for the betterment of our nation,? Mr. Johnson, the chamber senior vice president, said. ?The unions have jeopardized the entire immigration reform effort, which would provide a pathway to legalization and citizenship for the 10-11 million undocumented workers, because of their refusal to take a responsible stance on a small temporary worker program. These types of programs have always been considered a key part of comprehensive immigration reform.

?We however remain hopeful that we can resolve this problem and still ultimately pass sound legislation that can be signed into law by the president.?

On Friday, the labor community gained some help from an unlikely Republican ally ? Senator Jeff Sessions, Republican of Alabama. Mr. Sessions, who earlier this week sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee urging its members to slow down and thoroughly consider any immigration legislation to come before the committee, took to the Senate floor Friday to express concern that an overly ambitious guest worker program could hurt unemployed Americans.

?We?ve got an immigration policy that says, we?ve got jobs, we don?t have enough workers ? that?s what the businesses are telling us,? Mr. Sessions said. ?We need to be protecting American citizens who are here, out of work, hurting today. Minorities, blacks and whites, all colors and races, that are hurting today with high unemployment, and we seem to be more focused on how we can ram through this Senate a bill that would legalize millions and create an even more robust guest worker program.?

He added: ?There?s not enough jobs now. Give me a break.?

On Thursday afternoon, the bipartisan group of eight senators convened a second set of meetings that day. As the four Republicans headed over to the Capitol, they seemed encouraged, if not quite optimistic.

?Wait for the white smoke,? joked Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida and a member of the group, invoking the method used to signal agreement on a new pope.

But by early evening, the negotiations had deteriorated over concerns about the labor and business disagreements surrounding the low-skilled worker program. The group took a short break, with plans to reconvene later that evening. Senator Jeff Flake, Republican of Arizona and a member of the group, said that the business-labor portion of the legislation was proving by far the thorniest.

On Friday morning, however, the Senate group headed back to the bargaining table, where aides close to the negotiations said significant progress was made. Now, with just hours until Congress embarks on a two-week break, the bipartisan group is taking its latest compromise, and shopping it back to the business and labor communities.

Davis: US win more a 'snow battle' than soccer

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. ? Three points is three points, and if the United States does eventually earn its way to Brazil, the points gathered during a snow globe-worthy scene in suburban Denver will count just the same as any others collected in the long qualifying chain.

But what a scene it was, pretty and yet messy and certainly meaningful all at once Friday for the Americans, whose 1-0 win over Costa Rica should help quiet some unrest and put the team in a better place heading into a razor wire-tough match in Mexico City.

As for the soccer game itself, well, it wasn?t much of one.

?It was a real snow battle,? U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann said. ?By the second half it was a battle for second balls. For both teams it was tough to create a passing game or good chances. ?? We all just had to adjust to the snow. Battle it out. Finish it out and then move on.?

He was underselling the difficulty of it.

The footing was always treacherous, even in the first half when some green of the grass was still visible. By the second half, as the snow accumulated (against the best efforts of the shovel bearers at DSG Park), dribbling or passing over pretty much any distance was somewhere between difficult and impossible.

Clint Dempsey?s early goal was absolutely essential ? perhaps one of his most important yet in U.S. uniform, and he has a bunch of them. (In fact, with his 12th in World Cup qualifying the Texan is now tied with Landon Donovan for the all-time U.S. lead.) It took the pressure off of the United States, not to mention getting something on the scoreboard when worsening conditions was making any offensive maneuvering increasingly tricky.

Every athlete has been in backyard games where elements and obstacles rule; it did look at times in Friday?s fluffy proceedings as if the visitors had been in more of them. They seemed to adjust better.

(MORE: Pictures from the Colorado snow globe.)

The Americans seemed destined to get themselves in trouble with their insistence on playing patiently out of the back. The Ticos, by comparison, recognized the danger more quickly of doing so.

At halftime Klinsmann urged his team to get balls into the opposition end faster, and warned off certain balls that should not be messed with on such a night.

Still, there were times in the second half when the United States seemed determined to pass the ball through the midfield. Meanwhile, the Ticos were all about aiming balls to highly stationed Alvaro Saborio.

U.S. center back Clarence Goodson and Omar Gonzalez dealt well with the long stuff, but the danger always seemed present.

?The beginning of the game it wasn?t so difficult,? said Gonzalez, making only his second World Cup qualifier start. ?The snow was actually making the ball move pretty nicely. Once the stuff started sticking, it made it difficult to get your footing, to put together some passes or just to dribble.

?At halftime we said, ?Don?t risk any balls to the sidelines out of the back, any balls to the keeper. If you feel like the heat is on you, just put it up in the channels and let the forwards make a play. Just don?t risk anything.?

Individually, few players really excelled out there; some just managed the elements better than others.

DaMarcus Beasley got the assignment at left back, answering one of the vexing questions of the week. When the game still had some kind of shape, for about 30 minutes, the converted midfielder attempted to play as a very aggressively stationed left back, as the United States attempted to push forward against the visitors.

On the right, Geoff Cameron attempted runs up the right but sometimes was not on the same page as Graham Zusi, who seemed to have particular trouble with his footing.

Jermaine Jones showed everyone a lot, looking quite comfortable, bossing the midfield in the first 45 minutes (to the extend anyone could) and even playing through a nasty gash that required halftime stitching.

?He?s an example in this team,? Klinsmann said. ?They look at him and see him go again and go again, it gives a lot of positive energy to the team to see him battle through the way he does. In the end, I took him off because he was just exhausted.?

And then there was goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who handled almost everything better than he could have been expected to.

?In these conditions, you just try to get everything you can behind the ball, to make sure you have a good barrier behind it,? said Guzan, was started in place of the injured Tim Howard. ?The guys in front of me did a good job of limiting their chances, and the few opportunities they did have I was able to deal with them.?

Samsung's Android phones affected by another lockscreen bypass, fix is in the works

Since lockscreen bypass methods are apparently what's hot in the streets, it's no surprise that yet another one has surfaced, this time targeting Samsung's Android phones. A variant of another, earlier uncovered method, this one does not fully unlock the phone by itself, but does provide access to apps and settings for a brief period. Given that, as demonstrated in the video by Terrence Eden, it's possible to use Google Play to download an app to disable the locked screen and fully access the phone.

According to Terrence, this problem is confirmed on the Galaxy Note II, possibly the Galaxy S III and potentially on other TouchWiz UI Samsung Android phones. Disabling screen animations under developer options should reduce the vulnerability, but doesn't eliminate it without switching to another ROM. He also mentions Samsung is aware of the issue and is working on a fix, but that leaves phones accessible right now. We've certainly seen enough of these recently (Apple's latest version of iOS has also been victimized again in the last day) to know leaving our phones out, locked or unlocked, is foolish. At the same time, if a manufacturer insists on adding customized software to the existing platform, it could at least have the courtesy to do so without causing security leaks.
