Description:?Elisa is the hero of her country. She led her people to victory against a terrifying enemy, and now she is their queen. But she is only seventeen years old. Her rivals may have simply retreated, choosing stealth over battle. And no one within her court trusts her-except Hector, the commander of the royal guard, and her companions. As the country begins to crumble beneath her and her enemies emerge from the shadows, Elisa will take another journey. With a one-eyed warrior, a loyal friend, an enemy defector, and the man she is falling in love with, Elisa crosses the ocean in search of the perilous, uncharted, and mythical source of the Godstone's power. That is not all she finds.

Thoughts: Rae Carson somehow managed to make a kiss in a sewer sexy and hot.?How?! How did she do that?

Elisa is still learning to rule. She's a strong woman but unskilled in?politics?and unsure of her allies. The one person she trusts the most is her personal guard, Hector. Their relationship is complicated though. They have a political relationship, a protector/protected relationship, and a deep friendship that might be more. Elisa must choose a husband for political reasons, but she finds her heart belongs to the?commander?of her guard.

After an attempt is made on her life, she goes on a quest for the source of her power, hoping to use it as a weapon against her enemies. As she journeys to an exotic new land her friendships are tested and her political prowess is built. Her?journey?becomes a chess match as she balances her own feelings and needs with those of her country,?inadvertently?betraying Hector and possibly causing him his life.

Hector and Elisa's relationship really shines in this book. It's built on friendship and mutual experiences and goals. With so much of YA relationships being dysfunctional and one sided, it's always refreshing to read a well written realistic?relationship?based on mutual love and respect. Carson even manages to build tons of sexual tension and, yes, make a kiss in a sewer hot and steamy. Bravo, Rae Carson.

I love reading about kick-ass female?heroines?and Elisa is one of my favorites. She has a big heart but uses her head. She asks for advice and help when she needs it and isn't afraid to make a hard choices and sacrifices.

This is an excellent followup to Girl of Fire and Thorns with all of our favorite characters back. There's a maturity to Elisa in this book that wasn't present throughout the first book and Crown of Embers shines because of it. This book doesn't suffer from any of the normal 2nd book in a series issues, though, I do feel the need to warn you that it ends on a cliff hanger.

I adore this series. There's action, magic and a kick-ass female heroine. If you haven't started this series yet, I?recommend?you do now.

Major love for this series. This book does not dissapoint.?

Author Note: I got a chance to meet Rae at The Austin Teen Book Festival a few weeks ago and she is awesome! I had such a great experience with her - she's funny and warm and really really nice.

How Much Caffeine Is in Your Energy Drink?

Study: Caffeine Info Often Misleading or Missing on Energy Drink Labels

Oct. 25, 2012 -- How much caffeine is in your energy drink?

Don't count on finding out by reading the product label, a Consumer Reports (CR) investigation finds.

The consumer group tested 27 popular energy drinks. Eleven didn't list the amount of caffeine on the label. Among the 16 products that did, five had more than 20% more caffeine than the label claimed. One had about 70% less.

But all of the products had one thing in common: a lot of caffeine. That raises a red flag for Gayle Williams, CR's deputy health editor.

"The amount of caffeine in these products is worrisome," Williams says. "They tout that they are as safe as coffee, but maybe not. They have a lot more caffeine than an 8-ounce cup of coffee."

That 8-ounce cup of coffee has about 100 milligrams of caffeine, although coffees and teas vary widely in their caffeine content depending on how they are brewed. For example, CR finds that 8 ounces of Starbucks coffee has 165 milligrams of caffeine.

CR says safe limits of caffeine are up to 400 milligrams per day for healthy adults, 200 milligrams a day for pregnant women, and up to 45-85 milligrams per day for children, depending on weight.

How Much Caffeine?

The consumer group bought three samples of each of the 27 energy drinks and tested them for caffeine. The highest amount per serving was 242 milligrams of caffeine in 5-Hour Energy Extra Strength. The lowest was in 5-Hour Energy Decaf, which despite the name carries 6 milligrams of caffeine per serving.

Caffeine can result in restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, and tremors. High amounts can also trigger seizures and abnormal heart rhythm.

In the CR tests, seven products had more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per serving:?

  • Full Throttle (210 milligrams)
  • Celsius (212 milligrams)
  • 5-Hour Energy (215 milligrams)
  • Monster X-presso (221 milligrams)
  • NOS High Performance Energy Drink (224 milligrams)
  • Rockstar Energy Shot (229 milligrams)
  • 5-Hour Energy Extra Strength (242 milligrams)

Monster Energy, the drink blamed in a lawsuit for the death of a 14-year-old girl and cited in five deaths reported to the FDA, has 92 milligrams of caffeine per 8-ounce serving. That's about mid-range for the energy drinks tested -- but more than the lawsuit alleges the product contains.

"Neither the science nor the facts support the allegations that have been made," Monster Beverage Corp. says in a statement. "Monster reiterates that its products are and have always been safe."

Another thing that worries Williams is that energy drinks are marketed to teens and young adults.

"These drinks are accessible to kids; they are sold in stores near the soft drinks," she says. "And a lot of kids look at these drinks as a healthier alternative to soda. They may think it is better for them than sugary soft drinks."

The study findings appear in the December issue of Consumer Reports.

Netflix shares dive as analysts cut targets

(Reuters) - Shares of Netflix Inc sunk as much as 16 percent on Wednesday as analysts cut price targets and warned emerging competition will threaten growth of the company's U.S. movie and TV streaming service.

Netflix on Tuesday cut its year-end forecast for new subscribers by 2 million. CEO Reed Hastings said the company had miscalculated how quickly it would grow in the young and fast-changing Internet TV market.

Shares of Netflix tumbled as much as 16 percent on Wednesday. In afternoon trading, Netflix was down 12 percent at $60.07 on Nasdaq.

"The lower numbers should lead investors to question the total addressable market, especially as this slowdown is in an ideal environment lacking material competition that will likely soon emerge," said Janney Capital Markets analyst Tony Wible.

"Every subsequent quarter has the potential to intensify the competitive risks," said Wible, who cut his price target to $48 from $53. He rates Netflix "neutral."

Other analysts reduced targets by around $5 to between $48 and $65. BMO Capital Markets slashed $22 off its target to bring it in line with the top of that range.

Wible pointed to a possible rival product from Apple Inc and the expected fourth-quarter launch of video services by Verizon Communications and Coinstar Inc's Redbox.

The Netflix stock, which traded at $304 in July 2011, has slumped after the company imposed an unpopular price hike, faced new competition and increased spending on new content and an international expansion.

In a note titled 'No catalyst/No cure,' Stifel Nicolaus analyst George Askew said Netflix's business model was broken as the streaming business lacks barriers to entry.

"Aggressive companies like Amazon, Verizon and Comcast have set their competitive sights on the online streaming business and have other revenue sources to subsidize it," Askew said.

"We believe fiscal year 2013 will be another eventful and probably frustrating year for Netflix."

CASH BURN

Netflix is using profits from its U.S. business to fund expansions into new markets. The company said it will take a loss in the fourth quarter as it sets up new service in the Nordic region.

At the same time, Netflix is spending more to create its own original programming. Free cash flow was a negative $20 million in the third quarter that ended September 30.

Netflix said it will continue to burn cash for several quarters but that it does not need to raise money.

"But its recent slip up in guidance, and willingness to spend, creates risk that this view changes," said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett.

Crockett expects the company's cash to fall to $450 million in 2013 from its current $800 million.

Even analysts who have a "buy" rating on Netflix lowered their price targets.

"While we continue to believe Netflix represents an incredibly compelling entertainment value, the pace of adoption of streaming video in general, and Netflix specifically, appears likely to be meaningfully slower than we previously anticipated," said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves, who cut his target to $85 from $130.

The Generation X report: How many Gen Xers know their cosmic address?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Less than half of Generation X adults can identify our home in the universe, a spiral galaxy, according to a University of Michigan report.

"Knowing your cosmic address is not a necessary job skill, but it is an important part of human knowledge about our universe and -- to some extent -- about ourselves," said Jon D. Miller, author of "The Generation X Report" and director of the Longitudinal Study of American Youth at the U-M Institute for Social Research.

The study, funded by the National Science Foundation since 1986, now includes responses from approximately 4,000 adults ages 37-40 -- the core of Generation X.

The latest report examines the scientific literacy of Gen Xers about their location in the universe. Miller provided Generation X participants in the study with high-quality image of a spiral galaxy taken by the Hubble space telescope, and asked them to identify the image, first in an open-ended response and then by selecting from multiple choices.

Forty-three percent of the Gen Xers surveyed were able to provide a correct answer that indicated that they recognized the object as a galaxy similar to our own. Miller found that 53 percent of males correctly identified the image, compared with just 32 percent of females, and that the proportion who identified the image correctly rose steadily with education, from 21 percent who had less than a high school education to 63 percent of those with doctorates or professional degrees.

"One of the factors that contributes to this educational difference is exposure to college-level science courses," Miller said. "The United States is unique in its requirement that all college students complete one year of college science courses as part of a general education requirement.

"And because these courses are often taken during the first or second year of college, students who enter college but do not earn a degree are still exposed to college science and other general education courses."

Miller also found that more than 60 percent of those surveyed said that this was the first time they had looked carefully at an image from a space telescope, even though four out of five reported that they had seen this kind of image before, often on the Internet.

"One of the important results of the growth of the Internet and the expansion of communication devices is that it is easier today to find high-quality science information than at any previous time in human history," Miller said. "But some of the science information on the Internet is incorrect or misleading, so we asked our survey participants to indicate what sources they would trust for information about the universe."

The most trusted sources were information on a website operated by NASA, a program or exhibit in a planetarium or museum, a Public Broadcasting System Nova or Discovery Channel science show, and a lecture by an astronomy professor. The least trusted source of information was a lecture by a leader of a church or religious group.

Miller also examined the link between knowledge about the universe, as indicated by correctly identifying the Hubble image as a spiral galaxy much like our own, and a variety of personal and policy attitudes. Gen Xers who recognized the image were more likely than those who did not to agree that "When I see images like this, I am reminded of the vastness of the universe" (70 percent vs. 53 percent) and "Images like this show how small and fragile planet Earth is in the context of the universe" (58 percent vs. 44 percent).

They were also more likely to agree that "Seeing images like this make me want to learn more about the nature of the universe" (27 percent vs. 19 percent) and "It is very likely that there is intelligent life at many places in the universe" (39 percent vs. 26 percent).

But they were less likely to agree that "The size and complexity of the universe proves the greatness of God's creation" (45 percent vs. 51 percent).

"Unlike our distant ancestors who thought the Earth was the center of the universe, we know that we live on a small planet in a heliosphere surrounding a moderate-sized star that is part of a spiral galaxy," Miller said. "There may be important advantages in the short-term -- the next million years or so -- to knowing where we are and something about our cosmic neighborhood."

Apple reveals iPad Mini starting at $329

Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, introduces the iPad Mini in San Jose, Calif., Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)

(AP) ? Apple Inc. is refusing to stoop to the level of its rivals in the tablet market ?it's pricing its new, smaller iPad well above the competition.

On Tuesday, the company revealed the iPad Mini, with a screen that's about two-thirds the size of the full-size model, and said it will cost $329 and up.

Apple starts taking orders for the new model on Friday Oct. 26, said marketing chief Phil Schiller at an event in San Jose, Calif. Wi-Fi-only models on Nov. 2. Later, the company will add models capable of accessing "LTE" wireless data networks.

The price fits into the Apple product lineup between the iPad 2 at $399 and the latest version of the iPod touch at $299. But company watchers had been expecting Apple to price the iPad Mini at $250 to $300 to counter the threat of less expensive tablets like Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire, which starts at $159. Google Inc. sells its Nexus 7 tablet for $199 and up.

Apple shares fell $14.83, or 2.3 percent, to $619.20 when the price was announced. Shares of Amazon.com Inc. were down 12 cents, or less than 0.1 percent, at $233.66 while the rest of the stock market was in retreat.

When pre-orders start on Oct. 26, the iPad mini will be competing for the attention of gadget shoppers with the release of Windows 8, Microsoft's new operating system.

The screen of the iPad Mini is 7.9 inches on the diagonal, making it larger than the 7-inch screens of the competitors. It also sports two cameras, on the front and on the back, which the competitors don't.

The iPad mini is as thin as a pencil and weighs 0.68 pounds, half as much as the full-size iPad with its 9.7-inch screen, Schiller said.

The screen resolution is 1024 by 768 pixels, the same as the iPad 2 and a quarter of the resolution of the flagship iPad, which starts at $499.

"It's not just a shrunken-down iPad, it's an entirely new design," Schiller said.

Company watchers have been expecting the iPad Mini for a year, and most of the details, except the price, had leaked out. More surprisingly, Apple also said it's upgrading its full-size iPad tablet just six months after launching a new model, doubling the speed of the processor. Previously, the company has updated the iPad once a year.

The fourth-generation iPad will have a better camera and work on more "LTE" wireless data networks around the world. Apple is also replacing the 30-pin dock connector with the new, smaller "Lightning" connector introduced with the iPhone 5 a month ago.

The price of the new full-size model stays the same as the previous version, starting at $499 for a Wi-Fi-only version with 16 gigabytes of memory.

Apple has sold more than 100 million iPads since April 2010. Analysts expect Apple to sell 5 million to 10 million iPad minis before the year is out.

Apple also introduced a 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop with a "Retina" display sporting four times the resolution of the older model.

The new model follows a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display introduced this summer, and goes on sale Tuesday for $1,699.

The old MacBook Pro will still be sold, starting at $1,199.

The new model dispenses with an optical disc drive and a traditional hard drive. Instead, it uses solid-state "flash" memory. This makes it 20 percent thinner and at 3.75 pounds, nearly a pound lighter than the previous model.

Apple also eliminated the optical drive from its new iMac desktop computer, helping slim the edges down to 5 millimeters, one-fifth the thickness of the old model. That makes the edges thinner than most stand-alone computer monitors. It bulges in middle of the back, however.

An iMac model with a 21.5-inch screen will start shipping in November for $1,299 and up, Schiller said. A 27-inch version will start at $1,799.

    Home Improvement Ideas - redlighteagle

If you are looking to improve the looks of your home you can do it inexpensively when you hire a professional to get the job or jobs completed for you. Although you are not spending a fortune, you can have the home of your dreams.

The easiest thing to do that is a cheap home improvement idea is to paint. By putting on a fresh coat of paint, you are making your rooms appear more vibrant and clean. You can choose a crisp and clean white or a color that is stylish at this time and goes well with your furniture and d?cor.

Another one of the inexpensive home improvement ideas is to update your kitchen by having new "faces" on your kitchen cabinets. This is a lot cheaper than installing entirely new kitchen cabinets. You can change the look of your entire kitchen by changing the faces of your kitchen cabinets. If you want to change the color of your wood cabinets simply hire someone to paint them. Put new handles on your kitchen cabinets for a completely different look.

In the living room you may decide to add a picture window. If all of your windows in your home do not need updating, you can add this one window. The large window will give you a view of the great outdoors. This is especially important if you have a lovely view. Perhaps you live in the countryside and you have rolling hills and trees to look at. Think of how relaxing just looking at this picturesque view will make you feel. Place a recliner where you can look at this breathtaking view every time you relax in your favorite chair. If you live in the city and have a fabulous view, why not hire a professional to put a large window in your living room so you can look over all of the bright lights at night?

In your bathroom one of the inexpensive home improvement ideas is to also change the face of your bathroom vanity doors. You can make them look contemporary, country, Victorian, etc. In your bathroom you may choose to put in laminate flooring versus tile as tile is quite expensive. A new mirror in your bathroom will add a new style and make your bathroom look bigger. If you have enough room in your bathroom or the hallway closet to store all of your medicine cabinet items, you can get rid of the medicine cabinet altogether and put a large mirror in place of it. The mirror is flatter thus making more room above your bathroom sink and making the room appear larger. Ask the professional that you hire what is your best inexpensive option.

Do you have plain lighting in your hallways and other rooms that you really do not care for? You can simply change the votives that hang on the walls with something more updated and more your style as one of the inexpensive home improvement ideas.

There are many inexpensive home improvement ideas that you can hire a professional to do without breaking the bank. Make a list of the home improvement ideas you want to do and list them in the order of importance. Slowly go down the list and accomplish the new look of the home you want.

No signs of life from Lake Vostok - so far

Nothing to see here ? at least not yet. Lake Vostok, the vast body of water hidden beneath the Antarctic ice sheet, has so far shown no signs of life.

Isolated from the rest of the planet for 14 million years, Lake Vostok might be the only body of water on Earth to contain no life whatsoever. However, if life is found, it will be a big boost for researchers hoping to find microorganisms on icy moons like Europa.

A Russian team became the first to breach Lake Vostok on 5 February, after drilling down through over 3.5 kilometres of ice. To avoid contaminating the lake, their drill bit automatically withdrew as soon as it struck water. That water rose 30 to 40 metres up the borehole, forcing the drilling fluid away from the lake. The water then froze.

Sergey Bulat of the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute in St Petersburg, Russia, and colleagues have now analysed the water ? contaminated with some drilling fluid ? that froze onto the drill bit at a depth of 3714 metres. He counted cells and looked for traces of DNA.

    Bacteria detected

In preliminary results, reported at last week's 12th European Workshop on Astrobiology in Stockholm, Sweden, Bulat says there were only about 10 cells in every millilitre. There was also DNA from four species of bacteria, three of which were known to exist in the drilling fluid. The fourth was able to degrade the hydrocarbons within fluid to release energy, suggesting it had adapted to life inside the fluid. Bulat thinks none of the bacteria came from the lake.

He cautions that we cannot yet be sure that the upper layers of Lake Vostok are devoid of life, as microorganisms could be living at low densities that he could not reliably detect. "The concentrations expected for indigenous stuff are very low," Bulat says.

It will not be possible to draw firm conclusions until the team returns to the area in December. They should be able to pull up more ice from the depths of the borehole, most of it uncontaminated by the drilling fluid.

    Sediment target

Lake Vostok is one of many subglacial lakes in Antarctica. There are plans to drill into two others, Ellsworth and Whillans.

Ellsworth could yet become the first Antarctic lake to yield life. A British team plans to drill into it within the next few months, and will lower in a probe that will collect samples of sediment from the bottom.

That gives them an advantage over the Russian team. Lake sediments are the most promising places to find life, but the Russians do not have a firm plan to drill into them as yet.

The sediments are produced as the ice sheet grinds slowly over the underlying rocks, and will contain mineral nutrients from the rocks that could sustain microorganisms. The pitch-black water will contain little for the bugs to eat, so it's unlikely there is much life there.

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? The brain's key "breeder" cells, it turns out, do more than that. They secrete substances that boost the numbers and strength of critical brain-based immune cells believed to play a vital role in brain health. This finding adds a new dimension to our understanding of how resident stem cells and stem cell transplants may improve brain function.

Many researchers believe that these cells may be able to regenerate damaged brain tissue by integrating into circuits that have been eroded by neurodegenerative disease or destroyed by injury. But new findings by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine suggest that another process, which has not been fully appreciated, could be a part of the equation as well. The findings appear in a study that will be published online Oct. 21 in Nature Neuroscience.

"Transplanting neural stem cells into experimental animals' brains shows signs of being able to speed recovery from stroke and possibly neurodegenerative disease as well," said Tony Wyss-Coray, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences in the medical school and senior research scientist at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. "Why this technique works is far from clear, though, because actually neural stem cells don't engraft well."

Neural stem cells can endure essentially unchanged for decades in two places in the mammalian brain, replicating just enough to meet the routine needs of those regions. In most parts of the brain, they aren't found at all.

While of critical importance to maintaining healthy brain function, true neural stem cells are rare. Far more common are their immediate progeny, which are called neural progenitor cells, or NPCs. These robust, rapidly dividing cells are poised to travel down a committed path of differentiation to yield new brain cells of several different types including neurons.

It's known that treating humans with radiation or drugs that prevent NPC replication causes memory deficits ("chemo brain") and, in children, IQ losses of up to 20 points. Conversely, studies are being initiated to see whether infusing neural stem cells into brains affected by Alzheimer's disease can enhance patients' memory function.

One category of brain cells, microglia, descends not from neural stem cells but from an immune lineage and retains several features of immune cells. "Microglia are the brain's own resident immune cells," Wyss-Coray said. Unlike most other mature brain cells, microglia can proliferate throughout adulthood, especially in response to brain injury. They can, moreover, migrate toward injury sites, secrete various "chemical signaling" substances, and gobble up bits of debris, microbial invaders or entire dead or dying neurons.

Microglia normally are distributed throughout the brain -- rather small, quiescent cells sprouting long, skinny projections that meekly but efficiently survey large areas that, taken together, cover the entire brain. But if this surveillance reveals signs of a disturbance, such as injury or infection, the microglia whirl into action. They begin proliferating and their puny bodies puff up, metamorphosing from mild-mannered Clark Kent-like reporters to buffed Supermen who fly to the scene of trouble, where they secrete substances that can throttle bad actors or call in reinforcements. Within these activated cells, internal garbage disposals called lysosomes form in large numbers and start whirring, ready to make mincemeat out of pathogens or cellular debris.

In addition to their part patrol-officer, part cleanup-crew status, microglia can also secrete substances that help neurons thrive. They also contribute to the ongoing pruning of unneeded connections between neurons that occurs throughout our lives.

But like immune cells elsewhere, said Wyss-Coray, microglia can be a force for evil if they engage in too much or inappropriate activity. They might, for instance, start to remove healthy cells (as occurs in Parkinson's) or stop cleaning up garbage strewn about the brain (for example, Alzheimer's plaque).

In a series of experiments, Wyss-Coray and his colleagues have shown that NPCs secrete substances that activate microglia. First, the researchers observed that microglia were uncharacteristically abundant and activated in the two regions in the mammalian brain where NPCs reside and new neurons are formed. Wondering whether the NPCs might be causing this increased microglial activity, the investigators incubated mouse microglia in a culture medium in which NPCs had previously been steeped. Two days later, they saw that the microglia had multiplied more, expressed different amounts of various signal molecules and featured more lysosomes. "The microglia were ready for action," said Wyss-Coray.

So they injected NPCs into an area of mice's brains where these cells are normally not found. In the same area in the opposing brain hemisphere, they injected a control solution. Again they found significant differences in microglial proliferation and activity, and more microglia in the NPC-injected side had assumed a "Superman" as opposed to a "Clark Kent" body shape. When they repeated this experiment using only the NPCs' "discarded bath water" rather than NPCs themselves, they got similar results.

Clearly NPCs were secreting something, or some things, that were spurring microglia to action.

Using sophisticated lab techniques, the team monitored purified NPCs plus several other cell types found in the brain and assessed nearly 60 different substances known to have powerful cell-to-cell signaling properties. Several such substances, it turned out, were secreted in much larger amounts by NPCs than by the other cell types: most notably, vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF -- a well-known molecule produced by many cell types throughout the body. VEGF stimulates the formation of blood vessels and exerts a beneficial effect on neurons. Conversely, drugs that block VEGF (such as Avastin) are frequently used to combat cancer because tumors require an immense blood supply in order to grow quickly.

VEGF is also known to boost microglial proliferation. Because it is produced in such volumes by NPCs, Wyss-Coray's team wanted to see if VEGF alone could mimic any of the changes wrought by NPCs or their culture-medium-borne detritus. So they injected VEGF into mice's right brain hemisphere, and saline solution into the left -- again with the same outcomes. Taking the opposite tack, the team injected NPC-saturated medium devoid of the cells, as they had done earlier. But this time they first used various laboratory techniques to deplete the fluid of the VEGF secreted by its former inhabitants. Doing this almost completely reversed its microglia-activating effects.

"All of this strongly suggests that VEGF produced by NPCs is playing a strong role in influencing microglial behavior," said Wyss-Coray. "This is important, because in all neurodegenerative diseases we know of we see microglia out of control." The new finding may open the door to reprogramming misbehaving microglia to play better with other cells.

Voters In RI, Ore., Md. To Vote On Casinos ? CBS Baltimore

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) ? The slot machines at Newport Grand chirp just like the ones in Vegas. The winners exult and the losers shrug just as they do in Atlantic City. But ask for the blackjack tables and you?ll be directed to a video game screen with a smiling, virtual dealer. The nearest table action is 50 miles away in Connecticut.

?Wouldn?t it be great to see a real person standing there?? asks Cathy Rayner, a Newport Grand employee and president of the union representing the 200 workers at the slot parlor in Rhode Island?s famed seaside resort. ?That could be a person earning good benefits.?

Rhode Island may soon grant her wish. Along with those in Oregon and Maryland, voters here will decide Nov. 6 whether to authorize an expansion of legal gambling in an increasingly cluttered and competitive market that now includes casinos, slot parlors or tribal facilities in 40 states.

Maryland is in the midst of a bruising battle over a proposal to authorize table games at its casinos, and to approve a new gambling facility close to Washington. Campaign spending for and against the ballot question is nearly $40 million, exceeding the amount spent in the state?s 2006 governor?s race. The proposal is being fought by a company that operates a casino in nearby West Virginia.

Las Vegas and Atlantic City once enjoyed a corner on the casino business until one state after another moved to welcome casinos, riverboat gambling or slot parlors. Despite a dip in gambling revenues during the Great Recession, states continue to place bets on expanded gambling.

Commercial casinos contributed nearly $8 billion to state and local governments in 2011, according to the American Gaming Association.

Ohio, Maryland, New York and Kansas have added casinos in the past two years. Massachusetts authorized casinos last year. Pennsylvania?s first casinos opened in 2006, and the state is now the nation?s second-largest gambling market after Las Vegas.

?It?s like a casino arms race where one state has slots, so the other state adds slots, then the first state adds a casino,? said David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. ?We?re running out of states that don?t have gambling. The question is whether there?s a saturation point. We?re going to find out because the market is going to tell us.?

There are signs that the push for more casinos may be ebbing, at least in some states.

A casino referendum in Oregon appears to be failing before the voters even weigh in. Last week two Canadian companies pushing plans to open Oregon?s first privately owned casino announced they would spend no additional money on their campaign, saying ?it appears ? not enough Oregon voters are ready to add a private casino to the state?s gaming options.?

Oregon already has several casinos operated by Indian tribes. The proposed casino would be located in the Portland metro area and would also include a hotel and waterpark. Its developers spent $5 million on campaign ads promising jobs and education funding. But the proposal was a long shot even before the state?s tribes opposed it: Two years ago a casino referendum won just 32 percent of the vote here.

Rhode Island has long resisted efforts to authorize casino games, though its two slot parlors contribute about $300 million a year to state coffers. Combined with state lottery proceeds, that?s the state?s third-largest source of revenue. Voters here last rejected a casino referendum in 2006, but supporters of this year?s push say times have changed.

Next-door Massachusetts authorized casinos this year, though none have yet opened. Twin River and Newport Grand say competition from those facilities will threaten their business and the revenue they create for the state.

Local and state leaders say expanded gambling could mean more jobs and economic activity for a state with 10.5 percent unemployment, the second-highest jobless rate in the nation. The ballot questions have the support of Gov. Lincoln Chafee and, importantly, Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, a Newport Democrat and a one-time opponent of casinos.

Twin River and Newport Grand have spent more than $4.3 million on their campaigns for the ballot questions, which must pass statewide and in the host communities. Of that total, Twin River?s campaign organization had spent $3.9 million.

John Taylor Jr., chairman of the Twin River board of directors, said his facility stands to lose hundreds of jobs if the referendum fails, but could add hundreds if it?s approved. He said the slot parlor, just south of the Massachusetts line, could begin offering poker and blackjack as early as next summer if the ballot question is approved, giving it a significant head start over Massachusetts, where casinos are still years away from opening.

The rush to capitalize on gambling has critics warning that states are chasing after an increasingly small piece of the gambling pie ? and at the expense of bettors and their families.

?They keep saying `jobs, jobs, jobs,? but who is going to pay these salaries?? asked the Rev. Eugene McKenna, chairman of Citizens Concerned about Casino Gambling, a group opposing the ballot questions in Rhode Island. ?It?s not pennies from heaven. It?s hundreds of thousands of dollars from people who can?t afford to lose it.?

McKenna said a casino in Newport would forever alter the city now known for its historic seaside location, its Gilded Age mansions and upscale tourism.

To Diane Hurley, chief executive and co-owner of Newport Grand, the referendum is about keeping her family business afloat. Hurley?s father opened the facility nearly 40 years ago as a venue for jai alai. On a tour of the cavernous slot parlor she greets her employees and many patrons by name. She never asked for permission to offer table games, until the prospect of casinos in Massachusetts forced her to reconsider.

?Massachusetts kept threatening and threatening to do it, but then it became a reality and it wasn?t `maybe? anymore,? Hurley said.

Home renovation plans ? dreams or reality TOTS 100? - MarisWorld

Right peeps, in it to win it and all that I have BIG plans for some home renovation. I had them the moment I laid eyes on this house. In fact I even said to the Mr, I?m only buying if we can do this, this and this. He said ok and although I was aware my dreams would cost big money I was prepared to wait after all, it?s not like you move house every five years is it?

So after a fair bit of squirreling away the money was saved and it was time to get some quotes in. I got one from a local builder who everyone speaks very highly of, see his blog for yourself. That was at the beginning of the summer. The quote came back at around ?9000 for the complete project with no new kitchen ? that would be extra and then the Mr and I went on holiday to France.

A few glasses of wine, oysters and lots of moules marinieres and we found ourselves talking about getting married! We?ve been engaged for years and a wedding has always been put to one side because of the expense involved, money that could be spent more wisely elsewhere, right? (like home improvement for example)

Wrong! The more we talked the more our wedding came to life and then he came out with.

?Well you can?t have the home improvement AND a wedding, you?re going to have to choose.? Damn.

I went for the wedding, I don?t know why, I just thought it would be a good idea and so my home improvement plan was put to bed for a while longer. *sigh*

Then TOTS 100 announced that ratedpeople.com were offering ?2500 for the best home improvement project. They threw down a challenge for bloggers to take up.

Tell us which room in your home you?d like to transform, and how you?d do it, and you could be in with a chance of winning?2,500 worth of tools, materials and expert tradesman advice. RatedPeople.com will provide you with the tradesman and pay for his/her time ? and there?s no rush ? we?ll be there when you?re ready to start your project

It is far too good for me not to try, after all should the judge, Fiona Fullerton just nip down and take a look she could see for herself how my idea would look simply beautiful and so practical too. Take a look at my Kitchen Pinterest board where I?ve been collecting ideas

    Kitchen Pinterest board

The area I have my eye on is the main living area, the heart of the home where we spend the majority of our time as a family. In a nutshell I?d like to knock down the wall separating the living room from the kitchen and put in those fabulous sliding patio doors, you know the concertina ones that look really cool leading onto the patio.

In order to do this the kitchen will need to be moved back to it?s original home and I?d keep it all open plan, which is the choice of most interior designers these days and because that area is quite small, well I?d need to knock down another wall, make the bathroom smaller and ideally fit in a utility area because that would be so damn posh wouldn?t it?

    bathroom pinterest board

As for the bathroom it?s very tired, it will need a complete overhaul.

So, that brings me on very nicely as to how I will spend my ?2500 should I win.

I think the only way to make this project do-able is to break it down into smaller parts and I think as much as I?d love the open plan bit completed like yesterday I?m going to have to settle for the bathroom for now.

    1. ?Rip out the whole lot; tiles, fake dropped ceiling, old bathroom suite and floor. I would only keep the boiler as it works and that would cost ?2500 alone to change
    2. Change the two windows as the double glazing is blown.
    3. If I can ? knock out the fake walls housing the shower and sink. Replace with a glass shower which drains directly into the floor with one of those large rose heads that are so pretty.
    4. Add a large sink unit which attaches to the wall but has no pedestal allowing for easier cleaning. This is a well used bathroom as part of the main living area.
    5. Rip down the formica homing the boiler and home with something less ?In-Yer-Face? and possibly construct a cupboard to home cleaning products and so on.
    6. Re-tile the entire bathroom in delightful bright, luminous and modern ceramics

So surely ratedpeople.com could come and take a look? Surely they could tell me the best way to use my space and be able to tackle this project in three stages to make it easier to accomplish? They could advise me on where to get windows, the best bathroom suites and which tiles would illuminate the space to the best advantage.

And when that?s all over maybe we could look at decorating the hall and stairway too but that?s another blog post.

So there you have it TOTS 100, that?s my plan. Can you help?

Disclosure: The video has been made with the fabulous Panasonic V700 camcorder that I have on loan and I still haven?t discovered all of it?s uses yet. It?s a beauty to work with

Michael Schumacher wants to join rodeo after retirement ? Formula 1 news

Michael Schumacher who is currently driving for the Mercedes team has expressed his wish to join rodeo competitions after retiring at the end of 2012 Formula 1 season.

Schumacher has recently announced that he will be retiring at the end of current season. He has also admitted that he will not be continuing his career in Formula 1 anymore. Instead the driver has been looking for a career elsewhere.

?Formula One offers the maximum as far as emotion, speed and work completeness are concerned,? the German told Gazzetta dello Sport. ?Another type of car wouldn't give me the same feelings so I'm stopping here completely. I think I'll do Western riding competitions. My wife Corinna, who has done these sorts of competitions for years, has already chosen the right horse for me. I'll go for it.?

Schumacher is 43 years old currently and has dedicated almost two decades of his life to Formula 1. The driver has been successful in achieving seven world titles during his long career and according to the Formula 1 official website is statistically the best driver in the history of this sport.? The British magazine Autosport named him the second best driver in history of ?Formula 1, the first being Ayrton Senna. As of the current season, the driver is now the only one remaining who holds the honour of competing against Ayrton Senna.

The driver had announced his retirement once before at the end of 2006 season. During his absence of that time, Schumacher had taken part in sports like biking. He then returned in 2010 to drive with Mercedes in a three year contract which will end now. Since his comeback he has not been performing really well. He admitted that his stint with the Mercedes team has helped him understand the meaning of losing. The diver has no plans to return to the sport this time and says that he has no regrets regarding his decision to retire. He is very pleased with what he has been able to achieve in his career.

The driver confessed that he does not want to be remembered as a legend but rather as a ?fighter who never backed down?.

Schumacher is being replaced with Lewis Hamilton of McLaren and he is very happy with the team?s decision.
