Canada's economic growth slows in May

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's economy grew by a less-than-expected 0.1 percent in May from April as weak manufacturing and construction activity partially offset strength in natural resources and some services industries, according to Statistics Canada data on Tuesday.

Analysts in a Reuters poll had forecast, on average, 0.2 percent growth in gross domestic product in May, following an expansion of 0.3 percent in April.

Goods-producing industries overall were flat in May while services industries eked out a 0.1 percent gain in the month.

The mining and oil and gas extraction industry grew at a robust pace for the second straight month as crude production continued to rise after maintenance and production shutdowns in February and March. The 0.6 percent jump in May output followed a 2.0 percent surge in April.

Retail sales, finance and insurance businesses and wholesale trade also contributed to growth. Manufacturing declined 0.5 percent and construction activity contracted by 0.2 percent as the housing market softened.

University of Michigan starting running back Fitzgerald Toussaint is expected to be charged sometime within the next two weeks from his drunken driving arrest on July 21.

Toussaint, 22, is currently suspended from playing as a result of the arrest.

The Saline Police Department arrested Toussaint at about 11:45 p.m. July 21 near downtown Ann Arbor, according to Saline police.

Detective Don Lupi said Saline officers were working on a special enforcement detail in Ann Arbor alongside other local police departments.

The high-visibility enforcement detail allowed arrests outside of the department's jurisdiction.

Saline officers observed Toussaint's vehicle, a white Ford F150, drive through a red light at the intersection of Washtenaw and South Forest avenues, according to the police report. His vehicle continued to travel northeast onto Observatory Street. Police followed and signaled him to stop.

The officer who made contact with the driver, who was identified as Toussaint, noticed the odor of alcohol from within the vehicle, according to the report.

During the roadside investigation it was determined he had possibly been driving under the influence based on field sobriety tests and a preliminary breath test that officers administered, Lupi said.

Toussaint was transported to the Saline Police Department where he took a chemical test showing a blood alcohol content level of 0.12 percent, which is above the legal limit of 0.08.

He was held until sober and released the morning of July 22. Continued...

The case against Toussaint has been forwarded to the Washtenaw County prosecutor's office for authorization of possible charges for operating under the influence, Lupi said.

Following the arrest, University of Michigan head football coach Brady Hoke released a statement saying Toussaint has been suspended because of the incident.

"Fitz made a poor decision and has been suspended indefinitely because of that action," Hoke said. "There are expectations that come with being a football student-athlete at the University of Michigan and those responsibilities were not met in this instance.

"We will use this as an opportunity to educate Fitz and make sure he understands the high standards that we have established within our program."

Toussaint is a junior from Youngstown, Ohio.

If you could look back and wonder if you were the first people to have seen Yosemite Valley, what would you have thought? That is what it may have seemed for John Muir. He was not the first person to have seen the valley the first people in the valley. The first known people in the valley were the Ahwaneechee Indian or some call them Yosemite Indians. Their Chief was Chief Teneiya and there was eight villages including one at the base of Yosemite Falls called Ah-wah´-nee. The first know white man that came to the valley was in 1851. These men were looking for Indians and they had the intention of driving the Indians away from their land.

The valley was named by a young doctor, who gave the valley the name Yosemite. This is where I was confused many of the books and website I have read said that the Indians was Yosemite Indians but a website I just saw said that the doctor called the land Yosemite thinking that is what the Indians were named. This website said that the young doctor made a mistake. In a way I do not know if could trust that website as true history, but one can change history and made it the way he or she would have liked to see it. I am sure this website is true in most cases but many times a history story or a past story can also be made to more than it was at the time. Meaning making it a bigger deal then it was at the time. Now I am going to research the young doctor and see if this website got that right. Well according to this website the young man was named Lafayette Bunnell. I was interested in learning more about man. I searched his name on yahoo and found that it is true that he was one of the ones who first saw the Yosemite Valley. He was a doctor and was on Mariposa Battalion which purpose was to find Native American tribal leaders that lead raid on American settlements. I would like to read a book that has this man?s story of the discovery of Yosemite.

This book is called ?Discovery of the Yosemite, and the Indian war of 1851?. I will try to find a copy of this book and read it. I wanted to know more so I searched again. Bunnell encountered Chief Tenaya. Burnnell was the first non-Indian to see Chef Tenaya or at least that is what the website I saw said.

Printed photonic crystal mirrors shrink on-chip lasers down to size

ScienceDaily (July 22, 2012) ? Electrical engineers at The University of Texas at Arlington and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have devised a new laser for on-chip optical connections that could give computers a huge boost in speed and energy efficiency.

The team published its findings on July 22, 2012 in Nature Photonics.

At just 2 micrometers in height -- smaller than the width of a human hair -- the surface-emitting laser's vastly lower profile could make it cheaper and easier for manufacturers to integrate high-speed optical data connections into the microprocessors powering the next generation of computers.

Traditionally, edge-emitter lasers are considered as the candidate for on-chip optical links. But since mirrors are hard to form in such lasers and because the lasers occupy a large chip area, researchers have been challenged to find a practical way to monolithically integrate the mirrors on silicon chips.

Surface-emitting lasers necessary for a high-speed optical links between computer cores could be 20 to 30 micrometers tall, slightly bigger than one hole in the mesh of a car's oil filter. Yet the research team's engineers say that on a 1.5-micrometer wavelength optically connected chip, lasers of that size dwarf their silicon surroundings.

"It sits tall on the chip, like a tower," says Zhenqiang Ma, a UW-Madison professor of electrical and computer engineering. "That is definitely not acceptable."

Weidong Zhou, a UT Arlington professor of electrical engineering, says one challenge was integrating light into silicon chips, as silicon itself is not an efficient light emitter.

Zhou and Ma have collaborated to shrink on-chip lasers in recent years with funding from the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

As a solution, the researchers propose replacing layers and layers of reflectors necessary in the traditional distributed Bragg reflector laser design with two highly reflective photonic crystal mirrors. Composed of compound semiconductor quantum well materials, each mirror is held in place with silicon nanomembranes, extremely thin layers of a silicon.

Zhou says integrating compound semiconductor quantum wells with silicon is a promising approach. "We apply a nanomembrane transfer printing process to accomplish this goal," he says.

One layer of photonic crystal is equal to about 15 to 30 layers of dielectric reflectors found in conventional lasers. As a result, manufacturers could fabricate 2-micrometer-high lasers for data links with performance that could equal current designs.

In addition to their larger size, reflectors for conventional lasers are made of materials grown only at very high temperatures, which means they can damage the chip they are placed upon during production. Since fabrication via transfer printing can occur at much lower temperatures, Zhou and Ma hope their laser design can be used to place optical links on silicon chips with much less wasted material, time and effort.

Optical data links already exist at the largest scales of data networks -- the Internet's backbone is composed mainly of fiber-optic links between countries, cities and houses. But currently, that data moves over to slower metal connections and wiring as it travels from a regional hub to your house, your computer and eventually between the CPU cores within of the processor powering your machine.

"In the future, you'll see a move to optical at each step," Ma says. "The last step is within the chip, module to module optical links on the chip itself."

Through Semerane Inc., the Texas-based startup Zhou and Ma founded, the two hope to implement their production process in functional on-chip photonic crystal membrane lasers that could eventually be part of the next generation high-speed computer processors.

"We believe this laser will be used to make data links more practically available," Ma says.

"It is truly an interdisciplinary team effort," Zhou says. "The co-existence of photonics with electronics on the chip level shall enable multi-functional energy-efficient super-chips for applications in computing, communications, sensing, imaging and so on."

With widespread adoption of processors that use their laser design for optical links, Ma and Zhou could have a hand in increasing the speed along the local leg of the information superhighway.

"Eventually, a CPU core in America could be connected to another CPU core in Asia, with optical connections all along the chain," Ma says.

Off to the park: Week 29: Grateful for Craft

In our household we love to make craft. "Popette" loves making people out of pom-poms, googly eyes, pipe cleaners and paper rolls, or cutting out pieces of paper and sticking them down to form a collage.

Another favourite?of hers?is?stickers, ?and not to forget painting - which she inherited from Mummy (Poor Daddy hasn't got an artistic bone in his body!)

For as long as I can remember, I have loved art & craft. When I was young I would spend hours copying pictures out of my favourite fairytale books into my sketchbook, or creating something out of paddle pop sticks or be painting a masterpiece. Art was my favourite subject in high school and something I still love today. So I love that "Popette" has taken a shine to it.

Like "Popette", I used to love going to the shop and stocking up on art and craft supplies, then later going home and using them all up! I love seeing "Popette" use her imagination and create something out of paper or her pipe cleaners, and later tell me what she has made...especially when I can't tell what it is, but to her it is what it is.

She loves to show?her craft?off to Daddy when he gets home from work, or sometimes takes it in to daycare for her 'news'.

There are days when I couldn't be bothered getting the paints or craft supplies out and setting it up for her, but its when I see her enjoyment that it doesn't bother me anymore and don't mind cleaning up the mess.

We love watching shows like "Mister Maker" and "Play School", which provides some fantastic craft ideas. Lately shops like Riot Art and Craft and Spotlight, have become "Popette's" favourite shops, and whenever we are in the main shopping centre, she'll gravitate towards the Riot Art store.

What I love most about our little crafting sessions is the special time I share with "Popette", and the joy that craft brings to my little girl. So this week I am grateful for craft.

Manatee spotters are on the lookout at South Florida work sites

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ? As unusual professions go, this one's gotta rank among the oddest. Practitioners work 12-hour shifts, six days a week while basting in sunscreen. Their singular mission: detect and identify one of South Florida's unique residents, the roly-poly sea cow.

They are manatee observers, and can be found wherever maritime work might affect the gentle herbivores.

Trish Bargo is one such spotter, required by state and federal guidelines to scan South Florida's waterways, from Boynton Beach to Biscayne Bay, in case an endangered herbivore strays too close to a work site.

"I sit and observe while they're dredging," the 43-year-old Army veteran said. "If a manatee does approach, everything shuts down immediately and they wait until it passes."

Bargo's current assignment is to stand watch aboard a clanky steel barge while a crew dredges berths off Port Everglades, the busy coastal waterway within the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Danie Beach.

Next month the operation will move to the nearby Dania Cutoff Canal to deepen that waterway. The project is intended to open the canal to massive mega-yachts so they can access ? and spend mega-bucks at ? specialty marinas inland.

Standard industry pay for an observer is $160 to $170 a day. Typically, observers live on barges offshore, for three to four weeks at a time, when large dredging operations run 24 hours a day. Bargo spends about half her year offshore.

But this is a rare daylight gig. Perched on the excavator, Bargo slathers on sunscreen, listens to classic rock or reggae on her iPod, and reads during breaks when weather or balky machinery forces the dredging to stop. She scans the water surface for a nose, tail or rippling wake, but actual manatee sightings are rare.

"I'm always focused on the water, and yes, it can get boring," she said.

Long hours of boredom were rewarded one day recently last week when the object of her vigil appeared: a big snuffling manatee.

"He popped right up about 50 yards from the dredge," she said. "He came up and gave us a little tail flick and disappeared. We stopped work for 10 minutes."

Bargo, who runs East Coast Observers, a Norfolk, Va., company that provides spotters for maritime projects, is certified as an independently contracted manatee observer by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Waterway projects such as bridge work, dredging or boat races are reviewed by state and local officials and, if they may affect manatees, must have a spotter present.

Should a manatee approach within 50 feet, the job must be shut down and may not be resumed until the sea cow moves beyond the prohibited radius or 30 minutes has passed.

The slow-moving sea cows are vulnerable to heavy equipment like the unforgiving dredging buckets that bite huge chunks out of the bottom. The chunky mammals can swim upside down or vertically, roll and do somersaults, but aren't quick enough to dodge boats or machinery.

"If that bucket goes in on top of a manatee, the chances are pretty good it's not going to survive," said Bargo, who's never seen a dredge injure a manatee.

Folks react with favorable surprise upon hearing Bargo's profession.

"A lot of people think it's just wonderful and glamorous," she said. If glamour can be measured atop a noisy, fume-spewing, open-air barge.

Observers must have a general biology or related degree, or sufficient experience, to be certified. Most of the ones in Bargo's company are fresh out of college.

Work crews of years past were initially less than welcoming to folks who could shut down a job because a manatee shows up. Now, Bargo said, "We all have a lot of respect for each other."

Manatees aren't the only waterborne curiosities South Florida has to offer. "The boats that we see are just entertaining enough," Bargo said. "I see really, really fancy boats."

Two CDs, coming from both sides of the Atlantic, honor Queen Elizabeth.

British tenor Russell Watson?s ?Anthems: Music to Inspire a Nation? (on Sony) is his tribute to Queen Elizabeth in the year of her Diamond Jubilee celebration. It also celebrates the Summer Olympics in London.

While this is a nationalistic endeavor, even tea partyers shouldn?t object since Watson also appears regularly for American patriotic events, such as the Fourth of July concert in Washington.

Like most crossover efforts, this one has a mixture of the good (a lilting ?Danny Boy? and a fine ?Jerusalem?) and the questionable (?We Are the Champions?). On the latter, Watson is apparently as enamored of Queen (the British rock band) as the Queen of England. Another questionable piece is a duet with Vera Lynn?s 1940s recording of ?White Cliffs of Dover,? in which Dame Lynn comes off as the champion.

Watson?s recitation of Rudyard Kipling?s ?If? works well with Elgar?s ?Nimrod? from the ?Enigma Variations.? However, I never thought the theme from ?Chariots of Fire? needed words.

?Proud? (by Heather Small and Peter-John Vettese) has Watson?s most soulful singing and ?Flower of Scotland? benefits from the accompaniment by the Pride of Murray Pipe Band.

?God Save the Queen? obviously brings British audiences to their feet, but I never felt a desire to own a recording of it (or our version ?My Country ?Tis of Thee?). Actually, I feel the same about ?The Star-Spangled Banner.?

Watson, who survived two bouts of cancer, is in fine vocal shape.

Duke Ellington?s ?Queen?s Suite?

To listen to an American genius?s work honoring Queen Elizabeth, pick up ?Single Petal of a Rose? by the Duke Ellington Legacy. The nine-piece group was founded by the Duke?s grandson, Edward Kennedy Ellington II, who plays guitar on the album.

Saxophonist Virginia Mayhew is the leader and musical director of the band, and she shares arranging duties with pianist Norman Simmons. The title track, sensitively played by Simmons, was written by Duke Ellington as part of the ?Queen?s Suite.? The Duke recorded it in 1959, but only one copy was pressed, and it was presented to Queen Elizabeth with the understanding that it was just for her own enjoyment.

Simmons has backed up a number of great jazz singers, and one of my favorite recordings is ?Bittersweet,? a 1964 album he made with Carmen McRae. Nancy Reed (who sings ?In My Solitude,? ?Squeeze Me,? and ?In a Mellow Tone? on the new CD) occasionally evokes McRae without imitating her. She is clearly a new talent worth following.

Saxophonist Houston Person brings his bluesy sound to Simmons?s ?Home Grown.?

The CD includes some lesser-known Ellington pieces, such as ?Johnny Come Lately? and ?Happy Go Lucky Local,? as well as Erskine Hawkins?s ?After Hours.? There are also some pieces by Ellington?s longtime collaborator Billy Strayhorn, including ?Blood Count? (the last piece he wrote, when he was in the hospital dying from cancer), ?Upper Manhattan Medical Group? (presumably also relating to his medical treatment), and ?Lotus Blossom.?

UN reports progress against HIV in poor countries

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A record 8 million people with HIV in poor countries were receiving potentially life-saving treatment last year and new infections among children are dropping steadily, the United Nations said Wednesday, in an encouraging report on the AIDS epidemic.

The report comes days before the world's largest AIDS conference opens in the nation's capital with the goal of finally "turning the tide" on the epidemic, citing research that's possible to dramatically stem the spread of the HIV virus.

"The world deserves no less than a future of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths," Michel Sidibe, executive director of UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS, wrote in Wednesday's report.

The world is nowhere near that ideal yet: Some 34.2 million people are living with the AIDS virus globally, including 2.5 million who became infected last year. And 1.7 million died in 2011. New infections and deaths dropped slightly last year.

But the report found progress toward some interim goals.

More than 8 million people with HIV in poor and middle-income countries received AIDS medications last year, up from 6.6 million in 2010, said the report from UNAIDS, the United Nations program on HIV and AIDS. At that rate, the world should meet a U.N. goal of having 15 million people in those countries on treatment by 2015, the report found.

Increasing access to treatment doesn't just save the lives of people living with HIV. New research shows that treating them early so they stay healthy also makes them far less likely to infect others, a strategy called "treatment as prevention."

"We need to get that number up as rapidly as possible," said Chris Collins of amFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, who called the 2011 treatment increase unexpectedly high. "If we can get to scale with AIDS treatment, we're not only saving lives but we're preventing infection and beginning to end this epidemic."

Another key goal: To nearly eliminate new HIV infections among children by 2015, including transmission during pregnancy.

About 330,000 children were newly infected in 2011, a 24 percent drop since 2009, the report found. Nearly 60 percent of the 1.5 million pregnant women living with HIV in poor countries received effective anti-AIDS medications last year, to lower their chances of infecting their babies.
