LONDON (AP) ? News Corp. executive James Murdoch, under pressure over his role in Britain's tabloid phone hacking scandal, is stepping down from the board of Sotheby's, the auction house has said.
In a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday, the auctioneer said Murdoch had decided not to stand for re-election at Sotheby's May 8 annual meeting in order to focus on his role as News Corp.'s deputy chief operating officer.
The auctioneer said Murdoch had been "a valued member of the Sotheby's board."
"Sotheby's will seek to find opportunities to continue to engage with Mr. Murdoch in the areas of his expertise," it said.
Murdoch, the younger son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, has been shedding posts to concentrate on his role in his father's television business as News Corp. struggles to shake off the phone-hacking furor.
Last month he quit as chairman of News International, News Corp.'s British newspaper division. He also has resigned from the board of drug maker GlaxoSmithKline PLC.
James Murdoch has repeatedly denied knowing about widespread phone hacking at the now-shuttered News of the World tabloid, though his account has been contradicted by former associates.
In a letter to British lawmakers this week, James Murdoch acknowledged that he could have done more to get to grips with wrongdoing at the newspaper, but insisted he had been misled and given "false assurances" by subordinates.
Rupert Murdoch shut down the News of the World in July amid a wave of bad publicity and plummeting advertising revenue due to the hacking revelations.

International man of mystery runs for governor
HELENA, Mont.?? Neil Livingstone's biography reads like that of a real-life man of international intrigue, where big paydays and dealings with dictators are commonplace. Now the counterterrorism expert says he wants to leave all that behind to become Montana's governor, where chairing the state land board and congratulating state football champions could count as an exciting day.
Livingstone lists his own exploits as exploring tunnels beneath the demilitarized zone separating the Koreas, fleeing from angry Nazis in Argentina, suffering interrogation in 1980s Libya and dining with Russian mafioso. He also says he was wrongly subpoenaed for gun running and involvement in the Iran-Contra affair. And that time he was on the yacht belonging to a swashbuckling pirate whose other guests included numerous hookers? He was on a mission, he says, securing private planes to spy on a foreign country.
Libyan documents leaked last year stated that Livingstone was among a small group seeking a multi-million dollar payday to help Moammar Gadhafi find a safe haven. Livingstone, who has been a vocal critic of Gadhafi, said he was trying to bring a quick end to the bloodshed. The deal was rebuffed by the Obama administration.
Livingstone, a Republican, doesn't think his colorful background or his list of controversial past clients harms his chances.
"Without going into detail that I can't, I have served as a liaison for my government and others in terms of dealing with most of the difficult people on Earth," Livingstone said in an interview. "There is a necessity to work with some of the bad guys in the world. You are not going to find these people in church or wherever."
"I am not recommending prostitution to anyone, nor did I say I engaged with prostitutes," Livingstone said of the yacht episode. "I took my wife. She was the only non-hooker on board."
This spectacular list of exploits was removed from his campaign website late last week after he decided that "salacious" excerpts from his long biography could give people the wrong idea.
Livingstone most recently ran a company he started in 2007 called Executive Action - the same term used by the CIA in the 1950s to refer to their assassination operations. He started that company after leaving another called GlobalOptions Inc., which billed itself as a "private CIA."
Livingstone said in an interview that he wound down operations at Executive Action in order to return full time to his home state and run for governor.
Two individuals with intricate knowledge of the business, however, told The Associated Press in interviews that Livingstone had no choice but to lay off staff and close the doors. The former associates, speaking only on the condition of anonymity due in part to the close-knit nature of intelligence-related businesses, said Executive Action's only substantial client stopped paying and it was unable to recruit other meaningful business.
Not true, said Livingstone. Unwinding the company was a "conscious decision," but he couldn't delve into details for "reasons that are obvious."

Apparently not, at least so far. The unique biography isn't convincing Montana Republicans to rally to Livingstone's cause in a crowded Republican primary field topped by a former congressman and two state senators.
"He is an interesting candidate. You never see a guy like that," said former State Sen. Corey Stapleton of Billings, among the leading fundraisers in the field of seven announced Republican candidates. "He comes from nowhere, for all practical purposes."
Stapleton, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, said state Republicans seem worried that Livingstone's politics are "moderate." That tag has also been used in an effort to undermine Zinke in the eyes of the Republican base.
A policy statement that launched Livingstone's campaign last year embraced typical Republican issues: Fiscal conservatism, more natural resource development, restrictions on lawsuits and lower taxes. But it also took the unique step of calling for increased spending on schools and funding for the Healthy Montana Kids program that the Republican-led legislature rejected.
Stapleton said Livingstone showed up at campaign functions wearing flashy suits, looking like someone who has spent their professional life in Washington, D.C.
"I have never seen him get any traction at these events," said Stapleton, adding that Livingstone "doesn't appear to be a Montanan."
Livingstone has never been ordinary.
In high school, he scored a bargain on a rare coin collection and used the profits to buy a Ferrari - a rare sight in 1960s Helena. He arranges meetings in military time.
Livingstone's biography does not show that he has ever worked for the U.S. government or the CIA, other than a stint as a congressional staffer, but he said that is only because he has worked in classified capacities he can't discuss.
His only military experience came in the Vietnam-era Army Reserve.
He said "serendipity" led him into the unique counterterrorism world after he left a job working in politics in the 1970s and ended up taking a friends' advice to go work for Air America - covertly owned and operated by the CIA.
Over the years he says he has been a partner in Air Panama airlines, director of an Oregon helicopter company and a frequent terrorism expert for television news programs. He has authored many low circulation books.
Leaving that more exotic world behind, Livingstone is appealing in his campaign to out-of-work Montanans and day laborers, struggling families and others he says are frustrated by "the radical environmentalists (who) don't give a damn about working folks in this state."
He promises big changes and fast action if he is governor. He called his opponents with political histories in Montana "retreads from the past."
"I can promise you it will be a lot more exciting if I am governor," he said of the usual sort of meetings and hearings. "Ryan Zinke and I are different than any of the other candidates. We are running on a very different platform. We are going to step on toes and get things done."
He said they have promised to cut "red tape" by 50 percent, get rid of regulations that slow business and use the office to stymie environmentalists opposed to resource development.
"We aim to turn this state upside down in order to get it moving in the right direction."

An Internet outlaw's decision to go to work for the FBI poured light on a secretive world where young computer experts caused havoc and where authorities say a Chicago man and others celebrated their successes as they stole hundreds of thousands of dollars with stolen credit card numbers.
Court documents unsealed Tuesday revealed charges against six individuals in Europe and the United States and showed the clash between law enforcement and Internet hackers, a group of worldwide computer enthusiasts already threatening to retaliate.
Law enforcement officials said it marked the first time core members of the loosely organized worldwide hacking group Anonymous have been identified and charged in the U.S.
Some Anonymous members put on a brave face.
"Anonymous is a hydra, cut off one head and we grow two back," read one defiant message posted to Twitter.
At the center was the legendary hacker known as "Sabu," who when he was arrested last June was identified as Hector Xavier Monsegur, 28, a self-taught, unemployed computer programmer with no college education. Authorities said his cooperation has helped to prevent more than 300 Internet attacks.
Authorities said he was living on welfare in public housing in New York as he carried out crimes that made him a hero to some in cyberspace until he made a rookie mistake ? he posted something online without cloaking his IP address, or computer identity ? and someone tipped off the FBI.
Court records show he agreed to cooperate during an August plea proceeding and testify against others.
Among those charged Tuesday was 27-year-old Jeremy Hammond of Chicago. Investigators said Hammond boasted that he'd snared the personal data of a former U.S. vice president and one-time CIA director as part of an attack in December of Strategic Forecasting Inc. or Stratfor, a global intelligence firm in Austin, Texas, that affected up to 860,000 victims.
The government said Hammond conspired to hack into computer systems used by Stratfor, which describes itself as a subscription-based provider of geopolitical analysis.
It said he and co-conspirators stole credit card information for approximately 60,000 credit card users and used some of the stolen data to make more than $700,000 in unauthorized charges.
Court papers said a January email titled "Official Emergency Communique Straight from the Anonymous Hacker Underground" was sent to the company's customers whose accounts had been compromised. The papers said it claimed: "The sheer amount of destruction we wreaked on Stratfor's servers is the digital equivalent of a nuclear bomb: leveling their systems in such a way that they will never be able to recover."
Investigators said Monsegur and the other defendants were associated with Anonymous, and some were also part of the elite spinoff organization that Monsegur formed last May, Lulz Security or LulzSec. "Lulz" is Internet slang for "laughs" or "amusement."
Monsegur and the other defendants were accused in court papers of hacking into corporations and government agencies around the world, including the U.S. Senate, filching confidential information, defacing websites and temporarily putting victims out of business. Authorities said more than 1 million people were affected.
Prosecutors said that among other things, the hackers, with Monsegur as their ringleader, disrupted websites belonging to Visa, Mastercard and Paypal in 2010 and 2011 because the companies refused to accept donations to Wikileaks, the organization that spilled a trove of U.S. military and diplomatic secrets.
Also, prosecutors said, Monsegur and the others attacked a PBS website last May and planted a false story that slain rapper Tupac Shakur was alive in New Zealand. Investigators said it was retaliation for what the hackers perceived to be unfavorable news coverage of Wikileaks on the PBS program "Frontline."
A Twitter account associated with Monsegur has some 45,000 followers and regularly spouts expletive-filled anti-government messages. His last tweet on Monday was in German. An earlier tweet described the federal government as being run by "cowards."
"Don't give in to these people," the message read. "Fight back. Stay strong."
Monsegur pleaded guilty in August to charges that included conspiracy to commit hacking, admitting he obtained dozens of credit card numbers online and gave them to others or used them to pay his bills. His lawyer, Philip L. Weinstein, declined to comment Tuesday.
His deal with prosecutors requires his full cooperation and testimony at any trial. In return, he gets leniency from a potential prison sentence of more than 120 years. He is free on $50,000 bail.
Also charged with conspiracy to commit computer hacking were Ryan Ackroyd, 25, of Doncaster, England; Jake Davis, 19, of Lerwick, Scotland; Darren Martyn, 25, of Galway, Ireland, and Donncha O'Cearrbhail, 19, of Birr, Ireland.
Davis' lawyer, Adel Buckingham, declined comment. Contact information for the other European defendants' lawyers could not immediately be located.
Hammond, who was arrested Monday, appeared before a federal judge in Chicago and was ordered transferred to New York.
Defense attorney Jim Fennerty described Hammond as compassionate, saying he had rallied against plans to hold the 2016 Olympics in Chicago because he felt it would hurt low-income people and had protested against neo-Nazi groups.
"He's concerned about people and issues ? that's why I like him," Fennerty said.
In July, when LulzSec's attacks were grabbing world headlines, someone alleged that Sabu was Monsegur and posted personal details about him on the Internet. Sabu took to Twitter to deny it.
Barrett Brown, a former journalist who became closely associated with Anonymous, said Sabu's cooperation with the FBI could do serious damage to Anonymous.
"He was an admired Anon," he said. "He's been a leader. People came to him with information. God knows what else he told them."

Google applies for 'snap a landmark, find your location' patent
We're taking a trip into the fantastical world of patents, so the usual disclaimer applies. There's no guarantee we'll ever see this in a product, or that a patent will even be granted. Got that? Good. You're lost in the city and GPS isn't exactly being helpful, so whaddya' do? Well, if this application from Google get's the go-ahead, the solution might be as simple as snapping a pic of the nearest landmark. Uploading the image to Mountain View's servers, it'll compare your image to its geographical database of images and work out the closest match before sending you back your location. If it ever emerges from the two dimensional world of line drawings, it might be a handy navigation tool, or as an even more elegant way of getting around with those rumored Google Glasses.
